Is horribly difficult. I want to kill myself right now.

Don't buy and don't bum was my motto. After the first few days I got over the embarrassment of pulling butts out of office ashtrays. Good luck and make sure to remind yourself why it is that you want to stop.

I've never smoked, so I can't even imagine what it's like to try to quit. But ...

Um - if you don't quit, you're killing yourself. Quitting is saving your life. Keep telling yourself that.

Seriously - why are you trying to quit? Who are you accountable to in the process? The answers to these questions will help determine how successful you will be.

I am just shy of my 10th anniversary being smoke free. I went cold turkey. I remember eating a ton of 'tic tacs' (little breath mints) just to keep the cravings at bay. I also found an online smoking cessation support group that helped a lot too.

The physical addiction should pass after a week's time. After that you are just adjusting to breaking the habit. Avoid the places where you usually light up as much as possible. Change your usual routine so you don't think about it all the time! You will feel a lot different just after a couple days. I actually felt lightheaded. I think that was because it was easier to breathe and I was over-breathing (if there is such a word!) causing the lightheadedness.

Don't give up and don't believe your inner voice when it says 'I'll just smoke one to take the edge off'. You have to resolve to never touch them again. Just remember that it will get easier as each day goes by. As expensive as cigarettes are now, just think of all the money you're saving too!

Definitely. I wouldn't know it it'd do anything to you, but it's definitely cheating.
There seems to be something like lasertherapy too, sounds creepy to me. You know... It might help having your lad build something big and cilinderlike and then setting fire to it

ETA: Apart from that: I guess that just not giving in will eventually do the trick. I know people who had apples with them all day and started eating an apple when they'd normally light a cigarette...

Ask your Dr. to put you on Chantix. It is the best drug out there to quit as it blocks the nicotine receptors to the brain. All you need to break is the habit as the drug takes away any enjoyment you may previously have experienced. Be prepared for some really vivid dreams! Laughing

Ive tried the patches, ive tried the nicorette inhalator, and i think im not alone in having been smoking watching the tv adverts and saying "thats terrible"

And yes i still smoke but im trying to give up, i have never heard of chantix, ill keep trying the normal ways first, but then ill ask my gp about chantix, not sure if its avail uk but it cant hurt to ask about it.

The thing that made me stop was watching my Mother dying of lung cancer and being able to do nothing about it.

I originally told myself I've not quit just cut back to none a day

then I've done it for half an hour I can do it for an hour, I've done it for an hour I can do it for 2 and so on

it's now been appx. 1 1/2 years and I still get the odd craving but its gone within seconds

My cardiology consultant made it very easy for me ...

That was close enough to 7 years ago and I've not touched one or wanted one since .... or (touch wood) needed any further surgical treatment!

I do appreciate that quitting is a major act of willpower but I seriously urge anyone to do whatever it take before it's too late

Never smoked myself, but what exactly is it you would miss or be giving up?

All the money you burn, bad breath, stinky clothes, that hacking cough, the yellow stains on your fingers, the guilt every time you light up? So on and so forth.... Wink

Now 4 years free after acupuncture and an online support group. I highly recommend the support group as it helps to vent at people that understand. You know you are doing OK when you wake up in a cold sweat having dreamt you have had a smoke and are angry with yourself.

Stick with it and you will beat it.

I've found that it helps if I'm "doing" something. Last night I started getting crazy so I cleaned the kitchen and organized all the books on my shelves etc.

Although, the car-ride to work this morning was particularly torturous... Sad
