I was in Bali recently, and the Indonesian rupiah (I think that's what it is) is one of those currencies with lots of zeros counting up to not much money. I will admit it was kind of a heady experience spending "millions" on things! As I recall, 1 million rupiahs was worth something in the neighborhood of $80 US dollars. It made for some interesting shopping experiences. |

I just checked XE.com's currency converter, and it shows that 1 million ZWD currently converts to about $4000 US dollars. But it has this notice:

The Zimbabwean stock exchange no longer trades in Zim $. It's simply too volatile and being regarded as worthless doesn't help anyway.
This lot was worth around 25 to 50 US cents last year.

Yea they really expire, imagine you release 20,000 notes valued at 1 trillion.
The currency is changed, so 1 trillion = 1. But you have a non expiring note - your suddenly very rich. Hence they make them expire, and only redo the value after that date. Meaning new notes dont have 1 trillion value.
The other way is have "new" money printed with an equiv value. Like old english 10 notes and new 10 notes etc.
As the values are changed so must the money, either by date or design.
Still they will be worth something in the future, if just historic relics from a world still shoved so far up its own end these things can happen. |

Since January, the government already used several foreign currencies as payment, like $, €, and Rand, and now suspends the own currency for at least one year. |
