It was a symbol on the inside of a broken mobile phone that proved who burgled us.
Sadly that's all that was recovered, we'd been broken into Xmas eve a few years ago and they got most of the booze, pressies, money.
Most upsetting was the way they'd opened every present then tossed them about the place.

I don't understand not being able to make change. Don't the cash registers TELL them how much change to give you? I learned "reverse counting" when I was 16, and I always check my change twice - once as I see the clerk taking it out of the till, and again after it's in my hand. They never count it out anymore.

And they don't know the difference between dimes and pennies? I'm half blind, and I can tell the difference, but I still have to call the clerks on it from time to time.

Shouldn't that be "the total was $6.04"? Unless of couse your tenner is actually worth $10.92. Even then $.05 wouldn't be much help. No wonder she was miffed.

Funny you should mention empting the beer fridge. A co-worker's house was broken into last month and that is all that was stolen. The thieves didn't take the laptop on the coffee table but did take all the alcohol in the fridge. She figures it was neighborhood teens.

This thread reminds me of when hubby and I owned a smallish (well, big for the small town we lived in) home appliance shop. We had a couple of young sales assistants working for us and we decided to have a 10% off sale.
They had to use a calculator whenever they made a sale. Unbelievable!! Shocked

I live in Canada and we have a national tax called the GST (goods and services tax)
My province (like a state) has no tax.
The GST is 5% and people still can't figure it out!

Good lord man! how hard is it to figure out!

When I went to school, no one was allowed to use calculators... now, you can't take a test without one!!

and get off my damn lawn!

I actually remember being taught how to use an abacus... when I was younger.. and I am ONLY 38...

Some members of the role-playing group under 25 (and there are a few) look at me strangely because I can do mental arithmetic and rarely use a calculator.

I was listening to Talk Sport this morning (well, not me, because I hate sport), but in my dad's car. They were talking about burglary, and how it has increased 4%. They had a huge debate, and one guy said that if a burglar steps over the property line, and there are people in the house, it should be an instant life sentence. I happen to concur. Goodness knows the intentions of the burglar, if people are in the house!

I would disagree about that statement. There are a lot of thiefs that want nothing to do with people in the house. In fact, there is a distinction in the law about home invasion.

It is a much higher crime to buglerize a home when people are in it. This applies to both people that enter a home when they know there are people in it, and thiefs that enter a property and DONT know there are residents at home.

If they discover that there are people in it, and don't leave after the discovery it incurs a higher sentance.

There is a world of difference between a thief that wants your TV, and enters the home when they think it is empty (only to realize that it is occupied), and a burgler that makes it a practice to enter an occupied home (when they are fully aware there are people in the home).

Life sentence for the first seems a bit stiff. We don't even lock up murderers for life most of the time.
