Yahoo does not strip the IP. you can collect the IP and do a location search.

I believe that if you look in the header, you'll find it as X-ORIG: xx.xxx.xxx.xxx

tonyfrank:

Yes, we do recommend strongly to bait safe and use an email addy that will strip your IP like gmail and the such. (As long as you use it from the web interface.) However, a lot of baiters do use Yahoo addys too.

The best thing for you to do is to send yourself a test email and then trace your headers/IP and see where it places you. Then you can make an informed decision about how comfortable you are with whatever provider you use.

There are various places to check your headers and IPs. Everyone has their favorite. I use some of these:

http://headertool.apelord.com/

http://www.ip-adress.com/

http://aruljohn.com/track.pl

And there is some great info on headers and IPs in our own Eater University

Very Happy

Hushmail is secure, although the encryption makes using it a bit slow.

It is worth noting that many people are on a dynamic IP address. I know it is extremely common in the UK.

*Activates De-Geek-Speaker*

A dynamic IP address basically means every time you connect to the internet your IP address changes. This makes it cheaper for the ISP (Internet Service Provider). It also means that your 'location' could change (though I'm not sure how likely that is... If you're connecting through the same datacentre then it might stay the same whatever...).

Advantage of this for scambaiting? It'll confuse the hell out of any lads trying to track you down.

N.B. In the UK at least, there is very little risk from them knowing your IP. Just by resolving it, certainly in the UK, it is so unreliable its hilarious. I resolve to someplace about 300 miles away. The only way it would pose a real risk is if somehow they managed to get a court order to force your ISP to give up your details, but I can't see them doing that.

As everyone has stated GMail doesn't pass on your IP address but Yahoo does. However you would even then have to make some effort to get the IP address - as far as I am aware the IP address will only be seen when loaded as POP3 and not via browser. Then you have the somewhat inexact science of reverse DNS'ing the IP address (which somebody has pointed out is likely to be a dynamic address anyway) to a location.

In general I wouldn't worry too much about using Yahoo. Looking up IP addresses is of most use to baiters who want to confirm that their million pound UK lottery win is in fact coming from west Africa. Most lads wouldn't have the time, inclination or knowledge to worry about IP addresses.

Most webmail allows you to view the headers.
