with the millions of fake sites out there, and so many that members report - eater and business depend on each other to a degree.

wouldnt it be nice if every time a report went off to a spoof they thanked eater on there real site lol.

( I know we do it for fun, but ya think someone like paypal would say thanks every now and then - i bet we save them millions each year )

In nearly every case where a lad masquerades his bank as a legitimate bank, I copy that legitimate bank on my abuse letter. As a result, I've received perhaps one response from a legitimate bank. Typically, the legitimate bank ignores the abuse and the masquerade. I believe they consider it is bad for business if there exists any publicity at all to suggest there is a fake bank with the same name/address as theirs. You'd think they'd put a disclaimer on their web site or something, but no.

@D11
I wonder if you realize there's a hitman lad using a picture very similar to yours to try to scam folks. He's the subject of the "What a pleasant message" thread.

Mate,

You are onto something here.
Sites like eater should receive financial input from institutions/goverment.
They should even pay some baiters. Like what sponsors do for athletes.
Not a ludicrous proposition at all.

Perhaps it may even envourage members to stay onboard as members.

I disagree. That is completely and utterly ridiculous. What would we do with that financial input? What business do you know that would interject money to an online community that they no nothing about. We started as a 'volunteer' organistation, and do not expect to get paid. You joined this site, I assume, to fight scams, not to make 'a bit on the side'.

It would be alot easier if the LEO's worked more closely with us, but that hasn't happened, so I doubt sponsorship would either.

Herp has decided to move on for all the reasons he stated in another thread. It happens to a few of us. Experiencing that overwhelming sense of nothing for our efforts. Baiter burn out happens quite a lot. I went through it, and time usually sorts it out. Each to their own.

There is no government agency or institution that will pay anyone here to do what we do, nor convince Herp to remain baiting. If someone were offering to pay baiters, that would be one hell of an agency with a lot of employees ready to go.

Would be nice, but my motives are purely based on revenge. I wouldn't say no to a paycheck to go with that satisfaction.

Very Happy

There's a limit to that kind of thing. If we get £20 from every business, then yes, we could use it for things like that, and for server costs. However, it depends on the sum given.

It won't happen though.

And lads would be onto it in no time. Setting up fake sites, reporting them then taking them down to earn easy money.

And occasional thank you from the real sites, would be nice once in a wile though. Wink

OMG, could you imagine what would happen if an outside agency or gov't contributed money to the site? They would want to run everything, get their hands on everyone's RL details and then lose them to criminals, make new "rules of engagement," etc. etc...and ruin everything. And like Windy said, paying scambaiters would draw lads, but also other dishonest people. And the honesty of the members is one of the best things about this website Smile

It would be nice to be thanked, but there is satisfaction in seeing a 404 when you try to open a page you reported, which still gives me a small thrill every time, especially if I found the site and did the research. Plus you get a big sig line. The ladies go for that.

I also report the info to banks when a fake site is spoofing them and have received a number of thank you notes. Maybe we need to start posting them up for people to see.

I woke up to this this morning:

Quote:
Firefox can't find the server at biscod.com.

It was a thrill! Made me do this ----> jump_4_joy

Next to waking up with Harry every morning, it makes my day! Still a 'Thank You' from a legit site would be nice every now and then. I do get a few from some nice hosts/registrars.

And Doc, we ladies don't admit to checking out siggy size; but we do. Very Happy

nooo hang on i never said finance of any kind - thats not what i meant at all.

What i meant and i wasnt very clear but now ive had time to clear the cobwebs outta me brain - something like this:

a notice of a bank for instance:

"we take fraud very seriously, groups such as 419eater report thousands of fake sites to us daily and we urge our customers to take appropriate action to ensure they protect thier accounts"

That kind of recognition - not personal, not for gain, just to recognise we exist and do help them.

Do you mean if they put this information on their bank sites and newsletters? I doubt they would recognise or promote a site like ours. The majority of our content would not be in line with their corporate image. Eater offers scammers the opportunity to run around in underwear, hold signs with foul language and humiliates some of the worse manipulative scum around. We're not squeaky clean enough for a major bank to promote. We certainly get enough coverage for the work we do and a vast majority of us don't do it for the recognition. However, I do understand what you mean.

Until it got so out of hand and commonplace the banks couldn't hide it any longer they do now at least try to warn people about phishing and potential scamming methods ....

http://www.lloydstsb.com/security/phishing.asp

So at least some banks now admit there is a problem ... better than sticking their heads in the sand and hoping it will go away.

The real reward is seeing the scammer's site taken down, the occasional thank you from the ISP or the real site (very rare) is nice. Getting a standard automated response telling you what you've sent is a phishing attempt blah blah blah can be frustrating.

Publish the rarities .... it might encourage more people to get involved in bank killing.

I get thank you notes from time to time.

Phishing scams are probably the most dangerous. They have a lot of innocent victims. They are no fun from a baiting perspective. A phishing scam expects that it will be detected and shut down. Every one I have worked on depended on placing a page on an unsecured website.

Responses to a widely distributed phishing scam are predictable (PM me for details) Knocking one of these down as fast as possible is important. Minutes if possible.

Many phishing scams are sent out on Fridays or around holidays to take advantage of computer security people being home and victims who check their email and do online banking. Phishing scams look for banking informaion, credit card details, social security and other national identity numbers, personal information. Innocent information one context is damgerous in another.

My RL email has wide circulation. For the last couple years I have been killing bank phishing scams as soon as I see them. In the 5 weeks around christmas we killed 24 phishing sites. Since then 4.

To kill a phishing site.
The following are steps you can use.

1) Intially just forward the phishing email to the security email of the offended bank. Most banks have a specific email address for reporting phishing. Some banks have this email address buried deep in their web sites.

2) If you are comfortable doing it, view the source of the email. It will be a text window. Send this text to the phishing security. It contains amoung other things the URL of the hacked website.

3) I have a secure separate computer that I access the hacked website. Error 404 is your friend. If you get it the phishing site is already dead. If not there are layers of things that can be done.

a) I usually report the URL to bank security with a subject line like

Live phishing (bank name) website : followed by the full URL

The email body contains the details and my personal contact information.

b) Contact the owner of the site through contact information on the legitiment parts of the site. They have been Bicycle clubs, hardware stores, home improment companies and a radio station. The radio station I looked up the schedule and emailed the on air DJ.

c) Whois the URL and contact the ISP provider which is usually listed with the details of the live phishing site. Good ISP's will often shut down the phishing site within a few minutes.

Always, Always only do what you are comfortable with. Forwarding the original message will get it the attention it needs, do the other steps only if your comfortable. Keep it safe.

If in doubt contact moderators on eater.

Did I remind you to be safe.

Do you mean the headers? Also, this:

3) I have a secure separate computer that I access the hacked website.

Could you elaborate a little more on what you mean by 'access', i.e. what type of access? I'm trying to learn more about killing fake banks/sites and read that forum when I have time, but there is a lot to digest and a lot of the lingo/terminology is way over my head.

Thanks for any enlightenment!

^^He means accessing a compromised site without endangering his computer.

There are freeware programs available that will notify you if a site is malicious when you try to view it. Many phishing sites have malware, which is one of the reasons that we leave Spoof sites to be dealt with by companies the institutions pay for security.

Do you mean the headers?

I was being slightly vague. Most mail programs have a view page source function that shows a ascii copy of the email source, its HTML commands and embedded javascript. It also shows details of the headers.

3) I have a secure separate computer that I access the hacked website.

It is totally secure. It periodically gets an image reload. If anything bad happens I will lose nothing. Open web sites are vunderable to lots of bad things, as well as the hacked page. There are a few cases where the hacked page is trying to load some kind of trojan on anyones computer who accesses it.
