I'm thinking that we could do with a scambaiting song, using some of the scammers own words, some of their funniest quotes etc and maybe concoct up a tune or two between a few of us, redneck style.

Has anyone produced a lad's scambait song yet?

Something like this maybe ...

The Wurzels - Combine Harvester Song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btEpF334Rtc

^ North Americans here, you'll love it!

Any chance of getting some wily minds together, strum up a tune or two, maybe use it for a bit of promotion for this website online - 419eater.com? Laughing

^ Sounds like the Monty Pyth0n spam scene. Laughing

Anyone else want to have a go at some lyrics, and hmmm any guiturists in the house?

Is there any way we could put an hilarious song together, even if it was just for a laugh for the community here? Virally across the internet, I think such a thing, the finished product, could spread quite well, especially if there was a an educational slant to one of the repetitive lyrics used.

At the end of the day, it would have a serious side to the message, communicated in a very funny way, not to respond to scammers online.

Any ideas from anyone else please?

I know one or two musicians here, no doubt could get some recording time in a studio too. It just depends on members interest.

If you think it's a no floater too, fair do's, I'm just putting the idea out there, although it could just be quite a good, fun thing to put together, stick it out in cyberspace, see what happens.

Tombourine Man's thing is from Snow White.

Combine Harvester sounds great! I do radio work (I present two radio shows), so I can do all the editing. I have access to various backing tracks, so it would be better if we used one of those so we just put the mugus on top.

Coming over here since the Project: Rockstar thread is now locked...

It should be fine, legally. Plenty of people record their own covers of songs.

I'm not a lawyer or a musician but keep up a bit with copyright issues for my day job. My understanding is that if you record a cover of a song which is in copyright (and that's pretty much everything since Mickey Mouse was invented) then you'd have to get permission (which may involve paying $$$) from the copyright owner (who may be the laid-back songwriter or may be the Big Moneygrubbing Music Company who they've sold their rights to.)

Every time you hear "Happy Birthday" being sung in a movie? They've paid money to be allowed to do it, because the song is still in copyright. This is one reason why movies often sing the out-of-copyright "For (s)he's a jolly good fellow" instead....

In practice, if it's done for fun and has limited circulation then the copyright owner is unlikely to find out. But if it were done to make money and/or had a wide circulation then they could find out and would be within their legal rights to sue.[/quote]

Minette,

When a song is used in a film, they have to pay royalties to the copyright holder as it is being used for commercial purposes. AFAIK, for non-commercial purposes (i.e. as long as we aren't making money out of it), recording a cover / spoof of a song is fine legally (though you probably have to credit the original owners).

We certainly won't have anybody coming after us about it - just look on youtube at the number of covers that people record.

There is something called a mechanical licence, whereby you pay a licence fee to be able to reproduce a coyrighted songs, more information here:

Scam Patroller, I was under the impression that the need to obtain a license only applies when you are doing it for profit. Is this incorrect?

the way to go then is to get some musos top actually write music toplace the scammers onto. Dance Music is especially good for that, because you can record and sequence the lads into the tune, and there's heaps of software to record/sequence the music into...
