Hi: I am actually writing a novel centered around internet scams. It is a collection of stories about people who were had in some kind of scam. So, I'm looking for great ideas. What I would really appreciate are stories in which reasonably intelligent people got had - it wouldn't be much of a book if it was all about fools parting with their money. Stories in which maybe a baiter got too clever or daring might be really entertaining.
Also, I had a question. I recently posted an item for sale on Craigslist and got into an elaborate e-mail volley with some one who said they were going to pay full price for my item, send me a cashier's check by overnight mail, and pay me much more than what I was asking so that I could pay the person they were hiring to come and pick up the merchandise I was selling. I cut off the exchange, but can some one tell me how this scam works? As soon as I sent off an e-mail saying that the process was starting to look too complex, the 'buyer' disappeared. I would be grateful for an explanation. Thanks! |

The craigslist thing is a fake check modality. The cashier's check will be phony, you deposit it in your account, then wire the scammer who also runs the fake courier company. Oh, and keep any "overpayment" for your trouble. Too bad, when the bank finds out the check is fake, you are in trouble. You owe the bank of the fake check, and you are out the money sent to the scammer, and maybe the merchandise as well. The bank may even have you arrested for passing a fake check. |

Thanks for the response. I seem to recall, though, that the scammer encouraged to wait until the check cleared the bank before making further contact. Is this just nonsense? Do they then change the story and ask you to send them the "excess"? Should I have reported this thing to Craigslist? Thanks again for your time. |

Well there's a cleared cheque and a cleared cheque. Banks have to give you access to your money within a certain time frame. I think it's about a week.
They only do a quick check to make sure that the account is real and has adequate funds. If it is and it does, you get the money. A few weeks or months later, the cheque is sent to the clearing house of the issuing bank and is discovered to be fake. |

You're under a misapprehension there. Not all scam victims are stupid or greedy. You'll find plenty of examples of victims who aren't, on sites like www.scamwarners.com (our sister site) or www.fraudwatchers.com. Sufficiently anonymous to form the basis of stories for a book probably. More depressing than entertaining though.
Baiting stories can certainly be more entertaining, but there are probably copyright issues in reproducing them. I'd certainly consider legal action if any of mine were published without my consent. If anyone makes money out of my baits, it's going to be me. |

There are a number of references earlier in the thread to a book called Revenge of the Scammers by Cazzy Jones. The book is dismissed as completely fictional and I was just wondering how people could know for sure whether the material in the book never happened. Sorry for the vague question. |

^^^ I think the smile after the "totally fictitious" meant that you weren't supposed to believe it...
...but what do I know? I keep trying to get an inheritance left me and then there's this American working in Africa who I'm trying to get money to so he can get a shipment of antiques released from customs.

Generally, it's an honour system with baiting and the tales you read here, and the fact that most experienced baiters have pretty good rdar when it comes to detecting bs.
Having said that, my own best bait so far, has me wondering whether it ever really hapened, but I do have the e-mails, recorded phone calls and documentary evidence of the scammer's arrest. It won't earn me a fortune, or make people bow down at my feet, but it makes me happy and makes me smile when I think about it.
I recall a university lecturer in the USA getting taken and, I am not sure, but believe he may have gone to jail over it too, as it may have involved counterfeit cheques, there was a Lord Mayor of Northampton in the UK, a financial adviser in Australia who got taken for a million dollars and a pensioner in New Zealand who went to jail.
419 scammers infest most parts of the internet and they aren't doing it because it never works. |

From the timing of the replies, the reference to a book being fictitious/fake/"none of it ever happened" is not likely to be to the Cazzy Jones or Bob Servant books, both of which are fairly recent, but to "Greetings in Jesus' Name".
The foreword to "Greetings" does imply that it's a reproduction of true exchanges. Whether we can believe that scammers featured in that book made a wood carving of a computer keyboard, transcribed a Harry Potter into handwriting or had themselves tattooed in the hope of pulling off a scam is another question. It's still an excellent read. |

If you don't believe Greetings In Jesus Name contains real baits, then you're probably in a minority of one.
Here's a few more amazing shiver productions:
Now, which is more likely:- He really did bait for those objects.
- He commissioned and paid for those objects just to appear cool.
- He's the most amazing computer imagery dude, better even than ILM and Disney, and he created them by CGI.

And if the Shiver baits don't impress go look for the AT-At's and other Star Wars items in the photos forum.
Those are the types of stories I'd like to see in the second edition.
(Along with the George Bush bait, and the Colt Severs bait) |
