The mods may have a fit, but instead of posting this in the "What music are you listening to?" thread, I decided to open the debate here in general chat.
Pick the greatest guitar player of all time, and if you can, post video or audio of his, or her, work. I will start off, and nominate SRV. I really don't know how you can get any better.
Eric Clapton and Jeff Healey were on my short list, but upon review, SRV won out.

Blind Blake.
He is a genius for me. I´ve enjoyed his recordings much longer than Hendrix and Clapton, or Eddie Lang or Django Reinhardt, depending on your favourite genre. I´ve also made a "full" of myself to try to play them but it´s actually impossible to get his drive and swing 
He recorded from 1926 - 32, in the ragtime and blues genre. He also accompanied the famous singers and some jazz greats of the time. Only last year, one copy of his rarest originals was found, but generally, his 78RPMs sold very well among the black community and they are still regularly on ebay...not to mention the great 5 CD-Box with almost all of his recordings (excluding 3 Ma Rainey accompaniments and the newly found disc)

I think that it is foolish to try and name the best. Many are superb in their own style, classical, blues or what ever style you prefer.
The one that I like very much is Rory Gallagher, an Irish lad, who left us too soon, just as SRV did.

You are 100% correct. But threads like this, in an International forum, can introduce everyone to artists that they may have never heard before. Picking the "best" of anything is like picking the best color... it is totally subjective.

Frank Zappa has to be on this list. Sadly I never saw him live (i heard, December 21st is now the official FZ-day in Baltimore).
BUT: I witnessed the the stunt-guitar-player from his last tour-band performing together with Steve Vai - he played along Vai's solos (which i think is almost impossible anyway(to me)) with his left hand and played simultaneously the keyboard with the right hand

I saw Zappa play twice when I was a kid, and he was great, not only as a guitarist, but as a showman, both times '"conducting" his band like an orchestra.
Jimi Hendrix should be mentioned, too, as he was such an innovator, making so much possible. |
