just got this via e-mail, might be of intrest to someone.

I got a call last night from an individual identifying himself as an Telstra Service technician who was conducting a test on our

He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9),zero ( 0), hash (#) and then hang up.
Luckily, I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the
Requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which allows
Them to place long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number.
I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local gaols/prisons.
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. PLEASE pass this on to your friends.

As I teenager I discovered that if you dialled 174 on a UK line, and hung up, the exchange would automatically ring back, making the phone ring.

I used to 'ring and run' everywhere, driving people nuts. I just tried it and it no longer works.

^^ we could do that here as well but I dont remember what number we used.

If you do enjoy doing it, I believe you can ring the number that you are calling from to get the same effect Wink

LOL as I remember it in the old days of OZ it was 199. It was a line test code.
My father used it when he wanted us to come to dinner Laughing

We had a largish two story house with our bedrooms upstairs. The phone was down near the kitchen. Stupid teenagers, my sisters fell for it every time. I just figured if some hot chick was calling for me I'd hear about it soon enough Wink

We used to have the same type of thing: dial a number, hang up, and the phone would ring until picked up.

Also used to have a number you could dial and it would tell you what number you were calling from.

Been decades since I've done them. Don't remember them now.
