My barrister has been cloned again.

Over the New Year, when I was making my first WU payment to him, someone hacked his account and impersonated him, so for the last month and a half I've been corresponding with both Lazy Barrister (the impersonator) and Obliging Barrister (the original). It was good for a whole lot of confusion.

A month and a half, two bank accounts, 300 clicks at M7CN S3cure, and a dead dying-man later, Obliging Barrister is expecting me to make a MoneyGram payment instead, as soon as I get back from a business trip. (Lazy Barrister has given me three bank accounts and some hilarious trophies.) When suddenly, along comes another impersonator with new payment instructions! Shocked

I let them both send me a few emails while I tried to figure out what was going on. The original email address is suddenly emailing me from Miami, whereas the new email address is still coming from Nigeria. I sent a neutral email to the old email address to try and figure out what was going on and how best to turn this to my advantage, and... I got back an email from each of them, identically worded (except for the payment instructions) right down to the grammatical errors. Shocked

I'd been coming up with detailed plans to mess with them, but if they're in cahoots Rolling Eyes none of those will work. So for now I've just sent them each a terse "Is this a joke?" email. I'll be utterly fascinated where this goes next. I could end up baiting a whole army of barristers.

That is very interesting.
My bet is you have 2 fake barrister lads on the go right now.
One lad simply knew the others log-in, smelled some easy cash and set up a similar looking email account.

I love dismissing barristers.
Fake barristers are very pompous and arrogant.
They tend to go ballistic after pretending to do so much on your behalf.

You may try firing one of your barristers for no good reason.
Since it is close to pay time, the fired barrister will throw out all kinds of siggy lines to keep his nose in the deal.

You will know for sure if you have 2 lads on the hook as well since 1 lad with throw a fit and the other will continue business as usual...

Cool

At first I thought I had 3 barristers:

Code:
Original Contact
       |
       |----------------------------------.
       |                                  |
"Obliging Barrister"            "Lazy Barrister"
       |
       |----------------------------------.
       |                                  |
Moved to Miami                    Stayed in Nigeria
original addy                     new addy
original payment details          new payment details

But then "Moved to Miami" and "Stayed in Nigeria" sent me identical emails just three hours apart. That's the bit I don't get. If one was trying to chop the other's dollar, why would he-- why would they-- why the-- Bu-wha??

Hrm. "Stayed in Nigeria" sent his copy of the email 3 hours after "Moved to Miami". The mail makes no reference to an email I'd recently sent MtM. The Obliging Barrister always used bold text, and so does MtM whereas SiN doesn't. SiN's formatting has lost the original paragraphing; otoh MtM's mail has bolded my quoted mail as well as his text, which he never used to do. Spookily, SiN edited my email to MtM which SiN replied to, to make it look like I'd written to SiN.

Yes, my head hurts too.

I'm really looking forward to seeing their reply to me; I'm hoping it'll clear things up. --Or alternatively that it won't clear things up and I can get another month or so confusion out of this. Twisted Evil

(Firing the barrister is an awkward option as Obliging Barrister killed off his dying man, so if I don't work with the barrister there's no way to get my millions of quatloos.)
