I've got one on the hook who insists on phone conversation. He has tried several times my K7 number but seems to be too limited to talk to my "personal answering machine" (which is, as you know, a computer in the state of Washington Wink

)

Now I gave him my personal mobile number which leads to a vessel = Inmarsat connection; +870 number.

Does anybody know what the charges to an 870 would be? - I hope it's more than calling a simple landline number... Shocked

Inmarsat is a satellite phone system. They charge ridiculous amounts for high speed internet/data transmission because that's how news organizations send video from the field.

I would highly suggest keeping with the K7 or similar modality to not affect ITPs. If its personal message you need, do it or have it done.

Re K7, what you can also do is this:

Tell the lad that you "forgot" to give him the security phrase to bypass the voicemail. Tell him to wait until the voicemail prompt, and then say the security phrase. At that point his call will be directed to your emergency line, and you will pick up and answer.

Of course, if he doesn't hear your line start ringing, he'll have to say the phrase again.

Make him say whatever you want. I've made them say "BEAM ME UP SCOTTY!" and "HELP ME SPOCK!" before.

That's a lovely idea, Captain! I have adopted it immediately.

Isn't it a pity with long distance calls from abroad? Always so much static on the line, and the security phrase only works when the line is clear. And, of course, the pauses in between the phrase words are to be exactly 678.56 milliseconds...

You can also get a Flextel number (google Flextel) and redirect it to your mobile phone. I've done this, it works very well. I don't know how much it costs but it isn't cheap!

Hmmm...

I used to employ a Flextel "07..." number when acting as a UK resident. Quite nice service.

I'm not sure, however, whether Flextel diverts incoming calls to non-UK mobiles or landlines? Haven't been a British subject for months. Will get me a fresh Flextel account and try it out.

Don't make it too complicated, or you won't get the call.

You might get lucky, and they'll call 8 times like one lad did for me. Each time that lad called, he enthusiastically shouted "I LIKE RUMP ROAST!". Laughing

My excuse after that was that the voice recognition software was having some glitches, and that I had to reset it to another phrase.

Indeed it does, or at least it did last time I set one up to redirect to my US cell phone. I expect it cost my friends in Lagos a pretty penny to pay for the call to the Flextel and then pay the long distance redirect to the US.
