I've had a lad about 5 months who thinks I accept everything he says.

A couple nights ago he asked me how to check if a credit card was valid.
I asked him why? He told me a friend's brother died and they wanted to know if his credit card was valid. I told him to look on the back of the card and call the customer service number to find out more.

The next night he wanted to know what I knew about IP headers Crying or Very sad

I told him I knew nothing about it. And asked him why - he told me that an internet cafe there was supposed to have a US IP addy and he wanted to make sure it worked.

I asked him why again - and he told me that American IP's worked faster than the African ones (IP not IP addy). I explained that the IP's bounce off satellites and his speeds would be faster if he used an African satellite since the US ones would have to go through mountains and over the ocean...

It really bothers me he's getting credit card numbers from victims.
And he's wising up to IP headers.

He probably isn't worried about email IP headers, though you want to encourage him to think that your average American love victim is too stupid to research IP's.

Many companies are erring on the side of caution, and an order placed on an American credit card from an African IP will be flagged. So he probably needs the US IP to use the stolen credit card.

Re: Dorothy's post above, when traveling out of my home country, I always call my credit card company's and advise them of place and time of my trips. This is so when they see unusual charges, the red flags don't wave.

OH that makes perfect sense...I feel for the victim.

Luckily most places have fraud prevention and you're not responsible for fraudulent charges. But that still has to be a pain in the ass when you catch it Sad

I still can't believe he asked me those questions and expected me to accept his bs answers. I thought he knew I was smarter than that.

well I asked a lot of questions that were hard for him to answer...I didn't want to let on about knowledge of the IP at all...so I mainly asked about the credit card - really pisses me off...made him do some fast thinking though

I didn't want to slap too hard in case he decided to ask another victim about it & let those warning bells go off in their heads...

I appreciate the information about red flags on credit cards coming from africa and the use of american ip's to get around it. That makes logical sense and pisses me off even more Evil or Very Mad

He's going to get more of my attention.

Can you get the card details from him. It can be cancelled.
Tell him your friend runs a shop and can do an on-line check for you.

just don't ask for the ccv.

Hopefully reporting it to the issuing bank will have it cancelled and owner notified.

If you get credit card details, forward to a mod and they will see that they get to the right places.

Thanks, my YIM wouldn't load today so we didn't chat...but I'll innocently ask him for the number to have it checked by a friend who runs an e-bay business and deals with credit cards all the time.

Hopefully he won't know if it's valid yet or not.

Yeah with just the number, I wouldn't know the issuing bank or even the type of card (master card, visa, etc.) but passing on to a mod makes perfect sense.

Let's hope he hasn't figured it out and thinks I'm dumb enough to check it for him Twisted Evil

I don't know a lot about credit cards, but I believe that the numbers each carrier is issued are within a range, so if you have the number, it should tell anyone dealing with cards at least if it is a M-card or V, etc.

I told him that I had a friend who had a credit card machine and could tell if the number was valid or not. So he sent the number.

He wanted to know how much was left on the card, but I told him I couldn't get that type of information.

It was suggested I try to get more info from him (exp. date, name, zip code) so I asked him for what other info he had for the card - he had the name, address, zip code, exp. date, the security code on the back AND THE PIN NUMBER

I turned it into a couple mods and alan so something should be done with it soon.

I'm going to tell him that my friend didn't work on sundays and on monday night tell him that he couldn't get the card to go through, so it's most likely not valid.

Hopefully that will keep him from trying to use it.

One of my baiting personas is a woman who works in a store that sells booze and cigarettes. Of course she has access to the credit card processing. I have kindly volunteered to check MANY credit cards for the lads. Funny how they never seem to work.

The first digit identifies the type of business and combined with the next five digits are the provider details. So it's not to hard to trace it down. It's a great score. good work.

Lol well the lad asked me to tell him a joke last night ...

So I asked "what are all blonde jokes so short" (answer, so men can remember them)

He asked me "are you a blonde"? I'm angelina jolie !!!

Boy is he is hot water over that one - if things had worked out right we would have been married yesterday, it got put off a year since my heart is set on valentines day -- and he doesn't even know my hair color !!!

I even called him a "scammer" "why u say such things to me"

Hopefully he'll be a source of new credit cards to be canceled.

A busted credit card siggy icon would be great.
I think credit card baiting might be a new avenue for all of us.
It might get a little political as asking for CC details might appear a bit odd and illegal.
In in this current context it works well.
I would not like to have stolen card information on me without a really really good reason.
