Heya,

Here is my latest video thing. Intended as humour/entertainment.

Based on an email exchange from last summer, with "someone" claiming to be named Elvira. Russian mail order bride scam, but he/she/its auto-responder kept sending me love letters and pictures. The "someone" finally read my response to the email used in the video, but it was 12-14 rounds before a human got around to it.

"She" was going to come for a visit, needed money for plane fair and visa, and wanted it transfered via Western Union. In sales... its called a "closer". Regarding cons/scams... I cant recall, but it has a term as well.

Probably some guy named Boris or Ivan. Wink

It was a really fun project to put together, but I have taken the capabilities of "windows movie maker" to the limit and must now load the version of "sony vegas" I purchased before I can proceed with any further fun.

I also recommend you get a phone service such as yac of k7 which allows them to call you and have the message emailed to you as an mp3 file. It makes a good backing track to the photos you have there.

O.M.G. - what an awesome idea ! Those could be cut into sections, pitch correction applied, make a melody out of it... and actually have lyrics with singing for future projects.

Well... I have several days of reading in front of me as I pour over the FAQ's and archives. You folks are a Hoot !!! I've also discovered that my one baiting experience was not (perhaps) conducted in the safest manner... but I was making it up as a went along, without a guide.

And now look... there's actually a resource, with folks who do this all the time. Might have to become my new favorite hobby.

I took delight in simply stringing the person along... you guys raise the bar waayyy higher than that. The whole trophy thing... O.M.G. I want one of those someday.

Thanks for the inspiration... getting people to wear underwaer on their heads for pictures. Smile

You must remember, your trying to bait a Russian / Ukrainian and there considerably harder then the Nigerians. They will also work for weeks and months on a set of scripts. And just getting them "off-script" is a trophy in itself.

Try putting up a profile on My beloved.net then sit back and wait,, that place is loaded with scammers. Then when you get some hits, which you will, invite them to write back to you. The Russians only work on e-mail, so you can take your time, with replies, and don't go into to much detail, it's more to remember, and most of the time they won't read your replies anyway. Don't worry if you loose a few, or they don't reply. If you can catch a couple, you can learn as you go. And there's heaps of examples and ideas in this section of the forum.

Good luck, bait safe, and Google and Gmail are your best friend.

Yes... it turns out that my baiting of Elvira wasnt conducted in the safest manner. Didnt know there was such a sport. Random email into my normal email box. I'd gotten several from others previously, to which I'd called BS in a response and never heard back from. Elvira was the first I'd thought to have some "fun" with... the intent being "I know she's gonna hit me for money, wait for the pitch and THEN call BS".

Never in my wildest dreams had I imagined stringing them along, never revealing full awareness, and going out of ones way to mess with them... well after the money pitch, and burning their time and effort.

I'd thought it good to have gotten almost 3 weeks out of "her"... and even then, I was sending random images and sometimes pages from the phone book. I'd figured Boris had an auto-responder... and wouldnt even bother looking at anything more than email size and attachments. I'd bulk it up, to make it seem like lengthy letters with pictures.

Making it up... never knowing there were such wonderfully devious techniques such as you folks have got going.

Oh... foolishly (in retrospect) doing it using my actual email, cause thats where the initial pitch had come in.

Called "her" on it a couple times mid stream... and yet the emails kept coming. Even had a very sarcastic letter translated into Russian using a translation program and sent it... and yet, they kept coming. I could only assume "game on" at that point.

The concept of actually seeking one out, from scratch... "unsolicited" as it were intrigues me. But... I have much reading yet to do. I think the one time was beginners luck. Now that I am aware that I made alot of mistakes and was treading on dangerous ground... well, knowledge is power... but dont wish to be burned as a fool rushing into something.

So.. I shall read, learn, and observe the Masters at work for awhile.

Nah, you don't actually have to seek one out yourself. Just post a profile (all fake details) on any of these sites (and they aren't by any means the only ones, just ones that have a very high rate of return lately). Make sure the profile is unattractive, to reduce the likelihood of any real hits. Then just wait, and in no time the scammers will come looking for you.

RE: Myspace... yes, I have a work in progress there as well. Didnt start out as one, but has become increasingly obvious that it is one. I have to be very careful however, since its an account which is actually related to ME ! So... I'm thinking of bailing it entirely, at least backburner.

I have to walk an interesting line... since I am a public performer and need a variety of promotional outlets, and being visible in such a fashion cant be going "superhero" without drawing alot of unwarranted attention.

So before I can engage in any further fun, I gotta get some decent
alias(s) going.

To state what may already be obvious to you folks... you are actually doing a very GOOD thing by keeping these chumps busy from finding actual rubes to scam. At first I thought it purely sport, but it really is a public service, and you guys (and gals) should have a substantial sense of accomplishment about it. It really is fighting crime on a grass roots level, and you've done yourselves proud from what I can tell. OK... off my soap box.

It is with saddness that I must report that "Michelle" seems to have thrown the hook. Hasnt even opened/read my Valentines greeting. Bummer... but wasted alot of his/her time, have a halfway decent trophy on my comments section, and she may keep the video up on her own site for some time to come... at least until she reads my most recent Blog entry.

I dont think it was a money scam... more a case of attention. Possibly female, most likely male w/faux identity.

Nobody really looks that good.

Anyways... time to stop tossing lures in that pond, and move on.

I am also very curious to see who else drops off my MySpace now.

And... time to start working on a new "character" with background and identity.

It's very addicting and fun. While you're enjoying yourself at a new hobby you are possibly helping a victim not be scammed.

The "elvira" thing was from last summer. An email exchange from my actual email account. I have learnt 'dat aint a good idea.

The "michelle" thing was via my actual MySpace. More recent time period. Also not a good idea.

Didnt know there were guidelines, nor FAQ's, nor 'nuthin til discovering and reading here. Subsequent Google, yikes... broke most of the rules in the book during both.

I need a "clean" site where I can actually be (and promote, muscian type) myself, albeit with limited personal information. I have to at least be able to have gig schedules up... and even that on our dot-com site isnt universally a good idea. But its the curse of needing to advertise.

I'd been mixing it up, mostly out of not seeing the need for clear distinction between real and faux identities... if for no other reason than being more effective over time. Security of course... but I hadnt been giving out my SSN or CC numbers, etc. Oh... and keeping it outside north america, also a good idea.

So yeah... starting clean. If there are lurkers on or to my actual MySpace, they're on notice. Otherwise its "second generation" baiting, once I learn more and take care of some of the safety issues.

Thanks ya'll. This oughta be fun.

PS - ...and then its the little things, like remembering not to sign with my own name... which has now been fixed.
