I did some sort of agent provocateur and placed an ad in Craigslist. If you like to have a look at it, just click this:

http://london.craigslist.co.uk/sys/1025763545.html

A lad mailed me and asked for my email address for Paypal payment.

I'm not very familiar with Paypal. To the best of my knowledge, it's being used by Ebay members for transfers within the Ebay community.

Does anybody here know how a Paypal fraud would work?

Regards,

Riffraff

Paypal isn't just for Ebay, it can be used for a wide range of payment "modalities". I believe the Eater takes Paypal payments for premium membership (Which I really must upgrade to again!)

I use PP a fair bit in RL outside of EBay. Basically you can send a payment to any email address.

The recipient can register and get money out to a card or account for a fee.

The use of paypal doesn't necessarily mean a scam, just a neat way of getting payments if you don't want to go through the expensive options of Bureau Service (Worldpay et al) or opening a Merchant Account.

That's not to say there isn't overpayment or fake paypal messages potential...

Edit: Just had a chance to look at the listing. Very good, I almost bought it myself Wink

With PayPal you pay for the convenience, but it means you can be paid by credit card etc. It doesn't however mean that the card doing the payment isn't stolen, the PayPal account stolen, etc which will be clawed back from you in such a case. PayPal is *not* a bank, even though they like to act like one, so they're outside of banking jurisdiction. This means they make their own rules, so should not be a serious option for high value transfers. If the person is genuine, suggest a different transfer method (eg caxtonfx.com for large amounts, or WU for smaller ones) and see what they say.

Some lads will also just spoof a "payment sent" email from Paypal in an effort to get you to send the item. Some of these spoofs are pretty darned convincing if you don't actually log directly into Paypal or look at the headers too closely.

Well, this guy wasn't really convincing. His English grammar is worse than mine. Gulp.

Any rate, Paypal seems to be a very alert company. Have a look:

Now that's a pity!

But perhaps you keep a forgotten Commodore C16 or a VC-20 left in the cellar or the attic? Those sell at 6 grand plus 2,000 more for the datasette if you still keep it.

Any rate, the lad quoted me a delivery address in Manchester which I blanked out in the "Paypal notification". If here's somebody from Manchester or somebody who knows M., I'd be happy to PM him the address.

At your service,

Riffraff.

This is proof it is a scam, Paypal never does this. They only send and receive payments, they do not act as escrow.

....and they probably have an email address of their own. On the other hand, quite a lot of bank directors, barristers and lawyers employ Yahoo for their business email. So maybe Paypal is happy with Hotmail? Wink

Slightly amused,

Riffraff.

Sigh...

My business with brave Lawrence Anderson led to nothing. He even accused me of scamming him Exclamation

History: I sent him my Sinclair ZX81 at a bargain £4,600 to Manchester. Parcel was sent back since nobody was at home to receive it. I sent it again, taking some precaution (there's so much robbery on freight, and fraudulence as well, y'know...)

me wrote:

...I have now re-despatched the parcel.

To increase safety, it's not being sent to the address you quoted but to
a freight agency where you can collect it.
For collection, you need the tracking number and a password...

...To keep it sure, I would like to give you the address and the
password/track.number by phone. Please let me have your phone number...

It took some 45 minutes, then

My customer, young Lawrence wrote:

ok,i m not buying again, you want to scam me?

I'm depressed. And I'm ashamed to have made so much fuzz with Paypal.

Really kotowing,

Riffraff.
