Welcome here pained heart
I've been in Africa and seen the circumstances they have to live in without any hope of improvement, but does that imply that they can become criminals and are allowed to do what they want?
I can understand the way of thinking, but as said, they're everywhere and it is not only a Nigeria problem, it could be that the economic problems there cause the higher percentage of scam letters that we receive from there. I have no clue about that.
Now if we did nothing at all, would there be an advantage for the situation of those people in need? I don't think so.
Would there be an advantage for the people that get scammed? Ditto.
As the government isn't doing anything about it, there is no data available on this kind of crime. (if you are willing to call it a crime, if you say it's begging then why do they take so many precautions to accept the money anonymously and as safe as possible for them? And keep begging even after they have secured an above normal living standard?)
For now, with no research data it can't be that bad, so nothing is done.
At least we collect the data we can find and have it available for victims that get suspicious and want to know for sure.
Our sister site http://www.scamwarners.com/ even does more with helping those victims to take the right steps to prevent further loss and if they can get the info (often a result of baiting) warning existing victims that they are being scammed by email and over the telephone. All volunteers that put many hours in preventing crime and helping victims who would have no place to go if they didn't do it.
Of course, you think, but those victims are suckers, I have never been scammed, I never fall for that.
Okay, you're really smart, but did you know that most victims aren't living on the bottom of the society, have an above average income, a University degree and were thinking the same thing.
That billion dollar investment scam that just blew up in the UK is a nice example, not your average email scam, but all the right ingredients.
All financial experts taken for a expensive ride.
Anyone can be scammed even the members here aren't free of it and many have been scammed, all it takes is to find the right angle and you're lost. |

What do socioeconomic conditions have to do with the price of trunk-boxes in Lagos?

Can you give a detailed description of said toolbox? "Ethics" is a rather broad brush, philosophically speaking. I personally apply whichever philosophy I feel best suited for each individual situation. Results may vary. But thanks for telling everyone how you think we should feel. |

I'm so happy to hear that your "fair bit of traveling" has enabled you to tell the difference between internet criminal and destitute. If I lose my job in this economy I'll be sure to start check scamming as only those ignorant of my new socioeconomic condition will complain. |

No-one died. Plus lads exaggerate.
Danger to him was probably a disgruntled goat and several children with water bombs.
You'll also be happy to know that not everyone here is identical. Surprisingly we're all different people with different opinions and ethics. You're not the first and won't be the last... Thanks for popping by. |

Let's all have a show of hands...does anyone have the slightest amount of guilt for baiting these criminals, who most likely will never, ever, see the inside of a jailcell, do only what they freely decide to do (we have no guns to their heads,) and never give a victim an even break? Who lie, cheat, steal, murder, kidnap, drive their victims to suicide, financial ruin, and break every single ETHICAL and religious standard in every book written since the dawn of man?? Anyone..?? If so, you better go run along.
I've had three hits of my characters in two years ordered on me by my friendly neighbors, the lads. No mercy for the lads from me, sorry.
Is the bleeding heart ladhugger gone, yet? Oh, she's still reading...ok, I'll wait. |

So that is a good reason to ruin other people's lives too? Scammers have stolen whole family's savings and left then destitute and some time incarcerated. I am confident the scammer didn't set up a charity to help feed his countrymen and women. They took the money and improved their lot in life and learned how to be a better thief-criminal-scammer.These creeps do not better the world, they bring pain and heartache, pained heart.

You are sure painting with a broad brush. We as a whole are much better versed in the global economic conditions than the average world traveler. The best baits are well researched, unlike your accusatons.
pained wrote: |

Guilt is for doing something wrong. We make certain that the people we bait are actually scammers. It is not innocent people that are baited. We are discriminating, which the scammer-criminals are not discriminating. They love to prey on the weak, desperate and ignorant. They have no shame for what they do, they have no guilt for what they do, and they are the ones that should have guilt.

(1) We aren't the ones being taken in by these crimials. It is the people who can least afford to be taken for their life savings that are hurt. If the criminals really cared about their people, they would use their talents to do things that help their country.
(2) Most industrialized countries send billions of dollars to try to do just what you suggest. It has been being done for decades now and guess what? There isn't really an improvement AND scamming still goes on. These criminals are not interested in "honest work", it is much easier for then to scam.
Thanks for your enlightened suggestions. I appreciate when a dullard like you stops by and starts such a thread because it reminds me why I bait!

Welcome pained heart. I have a question. What does this mean?
pained heart wrote: |
Having been lucky enough to do a fair bit of travelling, |
1) Your parents were very well off and you feel you are better than us?
2) You feel we have not traveled?
3) You do not know how to spell traveling.
Anyway, if you do come back, pull up a chair, read the stickies, some threads, baits and then post up what you think. |
