The first person is me.
The second person is you.
The third person is everyone else.
The subject of the sentence determines which person it is in.
Do not get confused with viewpoint, which uses the same terms:
I kicked him. He fell over.
The viewpoint is first person throughout, but the second sentence is in third person. |

"Person" is a feature that affects finite verb phrases. You have three finite VPs in that sentence:
- I have returned the bank draft from the courier company...
1st person singular.
- [because] they were angry...
3rd person plural.
- [that] you gave them wrong information twice.
2nd person singular (or could be plural, but probably isn't; you can't tell this in English from the subject-verb pair by itself but from context).
So, the whole complex sentence has first, third, and second person clauses/VPs. In that order. The main clause, however, is first person.
It's been a while since I last wore my linguist hat on Eater. It still fits! |
