I got an email the other day from a Rich@rd Vale saying that he represents the Orchard Vale Trust, based in the UK.

It started out as a check-cashing scam and after I didn't bite he turned it into a 419. The full bait will come as soon as I start to get some real action.

His email traced back to Steisel, Luxembourg.

My question is this: I looked up the Orchard Vale Trust on Google and the NPO itself looks pretty legit. They seem to provide care for learning-disabled kids in the UK (acording to the web site). "Rich@rd Vale" sent his email asking for funds to help cure heart disease.

I'm wondering if this org is legit. As I said, the website mentions nothing about what my scammer is looking for money for.

If it's real I want to send the guys an email, let them know they are being used as part of a scam to make the lad take their URL out of his emails.

If they're not, I want to take down the website.

Anybody got any insight here?

My guess he's piggybacking off their site. Basically, using a legit site to make money that would have gone to a good cause.

The best way for a bona-fide website to cope with that is to put a warning on their home page. There's no point in them contacting him; he'll laugh at them. Likewise closing down his email account will just have him opening another that you don't know about.

I don't want his address closed down (he's my current project Twisted Evil ), and he isn't running his email through them so thats not a problem.

The link posted in his email is www.orchardvaletrust.org.uk.

It shows a warning, though only on donation page.

PLEASE NOTE: We do not conduct fundraising appeals through our website or by email. Any contact received in this way is fraudulent.

edit - to add looks perfectly legit, but perhaps contact a mod.

I guess my real question is this:

Do you think I am safe using the "Contact Us" form on the website to send an alert about the scammer, or will that scare off my lad?

Let a site expert look at the site first and see what they have to say.

This domain seems legit. Registered 9 years ago, the WHOIS information checks out with the address on the website. Indeed the lad is piggybacking on a real organisation.

KK, thanks guys. Keep an eye out for the scam posting soon. This one looks like a good trophy machine.

Edit: Warning sent via the website's Contact form.

Quote:
Just a heads up. I am a member of 419eater.com, a website devoted to taking down email scammers.

Recently I have been receiving emails from a man calling himself l2ich@rd V@le and claiming to be associated with your organization. He is trying to solicit donations.

In the email he includes a link to your website, adding credibility to his mock-up story. The link goes directly to your homepage, and someone unfamiliar with this type of scam could easily fall for the false connection. Many would not make it to your donation page and read the warning there.

I urge you to copy the warning about email solicitations onto your homepage (the page with the Google search function) as well. I am dealing with the scammer now and hopefully I will be able to shut him down temporarily, but others may be using the same trick he is.

Again, please consider adding a warning message to your home page.

Regards,

When he asks for money it will be so easy to send it to the real organisation. Will piss him off no end. Wink

Sending the money to the real charity will really put him over the edge. If you need help torturing him, let me know. You know how I hate charity scammers.

@SSA - Will do. I think this one will reach a point where I'll need to call on you for guidance. Right now I'm just in the prelim stages. Who knows? May even turn into a massbait if the lad is real icky. Twisted Evil

piggybacking charities is pure shitty Sad Give him hell!

I think your email to the real charity was a good one, maybe next time mention scamwarners too - and suggest they can put a link to scamwarners.com in their warning if they like (scamwarners is like our unevil alter ego), just in case anyone falls for the scammer.

Is that Joey in your avatar? JD, I retrospectively salute you!
