Hey hows it going 419 community!

Been a lurker and 'admirer' here for a little while and must say im thoroughly impressed and happy to see the things you guys have done to these people.

With that said, I have a question.. Was talking to an ex g/f recently and she was telling me about her purchasing a vehicle. she found one on Craigslist and it just seemed to good to be true for her situation.

Long story short, she recieved this email back from the inquiry. I was just wondering if this was legit or was some type of scam? I did use basic tips ive read on here about 'googling' the scripts, emails, etc, but I personally couldn't come up with anything.

Quote:
Hello again,

My current job does not allow me to call you because right now I'm a
computer specialist in the Army and I am not allow to make or receive phone
calls. Once you sent the money to TrialPay, I will call you when I get back home
to ship you the car.

Let me explain you how the TrialPay process works.
The process works something like this:
1. You send the payment deposit to an TrialPay representative.
2. TrialPay will confirm me that you have made the deposit.
3. I will ship the car so you can Inspect, test and make a decision if you will
keep it or not.
4. If the car is not as described or there is something wrong with the car I
will pay the shipping back and you will have a full refund from TrialPay.
5. If everything is ok TrialPay will get the approval from you to release me
the funds.
If you agree with this process please let me know your full name and address
and I will forward the details to TrialPay.

Thank you,
Patricia Br**ks

Something smells funny and it's not the dead goat in the trunk of the non-existent car.

I have never heard of trialpay and I will bet Western Onion is somehow involved.

Welcome to 419Eater.
This looks like a fake escrow scam to me.
http://www.trialpay.com/ is genuine but isn't an escrow business (although it sounds as if it could be).
What email address is "Patricia" using? A free one like gmail, yahoo, etc.
Can you post the email headers? They may show where the email originated.

This is absolutely a scam.

Look at his/her first paragraph:
Quote:

Army "computer specialists" are not allowed to use telephones? That is utterly absurd and patently false.

Secure computing environments put tighter controls on the computing environment than on the audio--and then if audio is a concern they use VOIP for the phones to get a computer-based look into phone use.

But of course this fellow (My money bets that Patricia is a guy.) works in a secure environment where he CAN use e-mail: a medium by which actual files and computer intellegence could be easily passed, yet the phone is off limits? Ever try to dictate a computer program over the phone? For a computer specialist, he knows amazingly little about computer security. He's lying--no doubt about it.

Also, note that his mangled grammar is a fair tip-off:
"I am not allow to..."
"Once you sent the money..."

So we know at least the following:
1) He is lying about his ability to make or receive phone calls.
2) He is not a "computer specialist," in the Army or anywhere.
3) He is not in the Army.
4) If he has any of your real-life info, it would be best if you simply dropped contact with him.

Thank you guys for your input!

Between the replies here and a little of my own researching, it seems that its definitely a scam.

Had a bunch of answers on "Y@HOO" that had asked the same questions.

Thanks again guys

Full email headers are longer than that but not shown by default.
Doesn't really matter though, as we've established that this is a scam.
