One of my friends is an overweight gay man. I've known him for years. I went round to his house tonight and, as I always do, I went to the kitchen and made myself a coffee. On his table there was a pile of reciepts for viagra and diet pills. I asked him about that, and he said he'd bought them online.
He doesn't think it's any big deal but I asked him 'what questions did they ask before selling you the pills?' and he said 'Oh, you know, credit card number, postal address...'
Nothing about his weight or lifestyle or medical conditions... just pay the money and get the pills...
I know it's not relevant to Eater, in terms of the website being illegal, but is it illegal? Is this allowed do you reckon? Seems a bit irresponsible to me |

Depending the country where the website claims to be located and their local laws of course, but how does he know he gets what he wants and not a placebo while paying a bit less than the full price?
There was over the counter stuff in Holland that you couldn't get from the doctor here (Canada) and the other way around. Each country on it's own. That's were the profits are along the border lines of the law. He can be glad he even got some stuff, sometimes they just clean out the card and send nothing. |

I never thought of that. I guess if the site is illegal then they might easily do that too. As it is, he seems ok with them but I'm not sure that it's right. I probably sound like more Monica than Phoebe at the moment but how does he know they're safe? They didn't even ask him about his lifestyle?
He's over 22 stone in weight he's 45 and he smokes and drinks heavily. They don't know that because they never asked!
It p*sses me off about as much as 419 scams because someone will end up dying if nobody checks before sending out pills to people. I'm a microbiologist and I'm thinking about taking a couple of the pills into the lab where I used to work and getting some of my old workmates to analyse them. *sigh* maybe I'm more like Monica than I like to think... |

There should be a government agency, that tests them when you are in doubt about what you're having there.
In Holland you could even have your drugs (the illegal kind) tested to make sure you would not poison yourself. It's strange, but it saved a lot of lives over the years. Yes they give the remaining drug back with an advice. Never got that part either I bet they had a whole lot of video camera's in the "test bus" to identify the users.
Edit: maybe even the local pharmacy in their slow hours would be willing to do it? |

Actually Bill, my partner is a pharmacist. Although he's Indian and didn't train in this country so can't work here. It would cost him so much too re-train that we couldn't have enough money to live on.
Genuine pharmacy qualifications that were earned outside of the EU (India in this case) are't considered relevant... oh the irony!
So he works in an Indian restaurant and the only way he can use his pharmacy qualifications is if he goes back to college for several years... which we can't afford for him to do as we have a child now and need to earn money to live...
I worked in Microbiology for 7 years. I can probably get them tested but I just think that it's a bit crap that they're selling drugs online and not even checking the persons medical history or lifestyle before sending them out! It just seems irresponsible... |

It is! But the big companies are making money so why do something about it, now you got me going [rant] they are collecting money for research to help that poor kid on TV with a cure for???, then they turn around and charge an arm and a leg for the result-- the cure that you have to take forever. And every country works on it, begs for money so they can be the first, to sell and patent the cure
About that study of your hubby, I get that, building engineer in Holland, would take me 6 years and X $$ to get the same papers for Canada to do the same job I've been doing for the last 20 years for the same company here in Canada? Do you get it? Immigrants are a source of new blood and income for the country they go to, milk them for what they're worth [/rant]
moved the rant end a bit to cover my a$$ with the mods
Yes he should see a doctor for a check up, just to be sure. |

When I used to go to Nepal for adventure sports I always thought it was great that you could purchase drugs in supermarkets you'd always need prescriptions for in the West.
These would be drugs for altitude sickness and giardia. It was only later that I realised it was very likely that they were counterfeit drugs of questionable efficacy, and could be more dangerous than the complaints you'd take them for.
I wouldn't ever purchase prescription drugs online, or any other type for that matter. |

Some of those drug websites are very questionable. If no prescription was required (in the USA anyway), and no health check of any kind was done, it is probably one of those companies that care only about the money they make and not about the person they are selling their drugs to.
Who knows what those pills actually are - they should be tested. |

I doubt those pills are dangerous. There's probably not much more in them than corn starch or whatever it is they use to form a pill around the active ingredients.
But better safe than sorry, if you can get them checked, it's probably best to do it. If only to give your friend a wake-up call. |

I sure the dealers online are as truthful as the dealers doling out drugs on street corners
Even if you could get a pal in toxicology to test the pills would it stop your friend buying them?
Yeah he'd be better off spending the money on a gym membership or healthy fruit and veg but the "quick fix " pressure is so great these days |

You don't need me to tell you that that puts him in a high risk group. And that he needs to see a GP, if he isn't already. |

There have been reports of fake drugs finding their way into NHS supplies which are supposed to monitored quite closely And it is estimated that in many parts of Africa more than half of drugs on sale (even such 'cheap' ones as penicillin) are fake. At best these are ineffectual, but in many cases may be actively harmful. So how can anyone rely on a questionable supplier online ? |
