For my shame I would have (at the time) been happy to see Colin Stagg hang. Just goes to show how important Due Process is.

I think the papers did have to pay Stagg a lot of money, but had the attitude that he was still guilty and the human rights act or leftie judges had awarded him money he didn't deserve.

I would like to see newspapers apologizing to him, like the police had to today. He used to be demon of the month to the redtops.

I'm not sure that a scambaiting site is the correct place to be debating such issues.
However, I have to say that Colin Stagg set himself up for his conviction by bragging to an undercover reporter that he actually committed the crime.

That wasn't the fault of the gutter press or anyone else.
He deserved whatever came to him and certainly did not deserve any compensation for his wrongful conviction.

I hate when the criminal goes free due to technicalities ... if he confessed and it matched up to the crime they should have shot him on the spot...

Does Scotland Yard (not sure which countries that covers) have a death penalty?

There will be a special place in hell for him

did you read the book by Paul Britton, the forensic psychologist? It was called "The Jigsaw Man". it detailed how they went about that particular investigation. it was quite interesting - but clearly shows how wrong psychological profiling can be without the appropriate physical evidence to back it up.

[1] AFAIK Colin Stagg wasn't convicted. He spent 13 months in remand before a judge ruled that the prosecution was badly flawed and the case was over.

[2] Colin Stagg didn't "brag... to an undercover reporter". He was cajoled into making a "confession" (and a shonky one at that) by an undercover policewoman (the "honey-trap" referenced in the linked article).

This has me perplexed. So Colin Stagg should have been executed anyway? He wasn't released "due to technicalities" but because there was no real evidence against him - and as it turned out, the crime was committed by another!

There was overwhelming physical evidence, all of it proving that Stagg was not the murderer, but Napper was.

The police made an absolute pig's breakfast of the investigation though, and despite psychological profiling suggesting that all three murders were committed by the same man, the police flatly rejected this and prosecuted Stagg.

AFAIK Yastreb is correct. Stagg never admitted to the murder.

Due to the honeytrap he was supposed to have given details that only the murderer would have been aware of. We can now see that not only was he set-up by the cops but the fact is, the info certainly wasn't something "only the murderer could know".

Basically, the media and the shoddy police investigation have ruined this guy's life for the last couple of decades. The irony is that it would probably have been less painless to him if they had wrongly convicted him and sentenced him to life in jail. Hearing him on the radio yesterday, he seemed to display a lot less venom towards the police and the media than they deserve. He got a payout of £750k. Personally, I reckon he should have got at least double that.

One has to wonder wether the same thing is happening to Barry George - the guy convicted and freed for the Dando murder. The media has witch-hunted him since his release and the cops are saying that they're not looking for anyone else.

I won't say anything more on this subject as it's bordering on the political but suffice to say, the media in the UK should now stop playing at judge and jury after this travesty.
