The first version I heard was John Cale's. I like his. When I heard the original, I thought it was some sort of bad joke. It sounds like scary lounge music to me.
Damien Rice also does a brilliant cover, which was done at Cohen's R&R Hall of Fame induction.

I wish i could find a link to the prog I heard on the world service , it was an interview with Leonard Cohen, amongst other things he discussed Hallelujah
including how long it had taken to write it!
As usual there is a lot of subtext to the song, most of Leonard Cohen is buried under the lyrics
