Has anybody else noticed an increase of scammers on Facebook? This is just really bothers me, because people post so many real life details on that site. Since Facebook was built as a networking tool for college students the "kids" seem more trusting. This false sense of security bothers me, compounded by the fact that I have two college aged children.
Here is an example of one lad who has used Facebook to back his story. He claims to be from Texas and in the oil industry. http://www.facebook.com/s.php?q=%22jefferson+williams%22+houston+texas&n=-1&k=400000000010&sf=r&init=q&sid=d8cda7b8d69a1cb2d746341a02d894ea#/s.php?k=100000080&id=1459524462&sid=75f74857526e752247ccf502d593ab30
He has managed to collect 15 friends, mostly from Shell Oil or from a university in Texas. I know of at least two women that he has scammed, and he is using the information he learned from them to enhance his story.
He is also on Myspace with a new profile that does not yet have any friends:
http://www.myspace.com/434824540
This other one has not been as focused in collecting friends notice that all of his friends are women. Again, I know that at least two of those "friends" are victims. They could all be potential victims.
http://www.facebook.com/friends/?id=1419006041#/s.php?k=100000080&id=1419006041&sid=4f945620d6211cda21ae0f82eb9fb7c0
So if anybody has a profile on Facebook, please feel free to get friendly. There is a victim of the second lad that is in serious denial, and will not believe that the love of her life is a scammer.
On the first one, I believe there is a de-education opportunity. Does anybody have any thoughts on that? Has anybody ever heard of "Sk@mford" university? Or maybe some new oil company along the lines of TW@T.
I don't have time to do much baiting, but I will create some characters if somebody is need of some extra friends. (This does hit an ethical note with me, as it further dilutes the "real" population on Facebook). But it might be necessary. Any thoughts? |

Not just Facebook, it's happening on Netlog, too.
As it's my real life profile, I mark as spam and block, but they use white guys photos, are usually engineers from Houston and always go on (and on..and on...) about being lonely, thinking I may be the one, that God has a reason yadda yadda yadda.
A quick Google flags them as scammers, some have been baited, and are being baited, on this site, and now, I have girls writing to me, as if I was a Bloke Tis very unsettling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

To be totally honest anybody putting real life information anywhere on the internet is asking for trouble.
All this crap about having social networks on the internet and to help students keep in touch is bollocks. Myspace and Facebook are no different to Adult friend finder and the myriad of other dating/pickup sites. |

I have a profile on MySpace, but not all the information in it is strictly true. At the advice of the friend who asked me to join, I used a different birthdate (close to the real one, but not exact) and a different Zip code (close, but a different county).
I get friend requests from all kinds of people, but I am on there for one specific category of people, and I write to those asking to be my friend and ask why they particularly want to be my friend. Usually they disappear. Occasionally they will tell me they want to talk about our common situation, and I will accept their request.
I get scammers, yes, and the occasional female who has apparently sent out messages to all and sundry, and even the spammed invitations to apply for a modelling job. Now, anyone who has seen my profile knows that I'm definitely NOT potential model material.
I share your concern for the students, though. At that age the number of friends you have is more important than the quality of the friendship. And a "friend" who knows how to push the right buttons could be very dangerous indeed. |

I created a fake facebook account for a female character and used the friend search on "her" gmail account to see how many scammers I had been dealing with appeared on there. I found quite a few I can tell you and they use their real pictures on some of them. I poke them from time to time... |

A friend's goaded me into putting up a facebook account but I'll be damned if i'm gonna put up my phone number onto the effing thing. I get enough loonies in real life to deal with, I sure as sh** don't need to add the interwebmegalink to my woes as well...
I'll expect to get messages from scammers in an hour or two |
