She's doing her show on 419 scams.

They literally showed the house of one of the top Nigerian guys...pool, tennis court, the works.

She has a guy on explaining the various scams and the terminology ("mugu", etc.)

I don't know if this is a new episode or rerun, and if this has been posted before I apologize.

Hopefully this will get more word out and save some people their savings and trouble.

It reruns in my area in the middle of the night but I can't be sure about overseas. I'm sure it will show up on youtube and some clips & stuff will be on oprah.com within the hour if not already.

They have covered 419 scams, romance scams, and next up will be lottery scams.

I am watching it as well. They are doing a pretty good job covering various types of scams - lottery, love, work-at-home, etc. Also showing what to look for, such as grammer and spelling; how to spot a fake check, etc. Also discussing the possible legal ramifications for the victims who accept checks or goods.

They showed footage of a typical Nigerian internet cafe getting raided by the authorities. The claim that the scamming industry is about $3 billion a year and the US mail service has intercepted piles of fake checks - unfortunately I forget the number they said.

They mentioned RomanceScam website, which I was logged into at the time, and now the site is down. Probably got so many hits. I'm sure there will be all kinds of new reports coming into the sites now.

I saw someplace that 20/20 will be doing a related story this week as well. I think it is on Friday.

I guess I will be getting the delayed version. Oprah doesn't start for another 10 minutes. I will check it out...

On the other hand they are having a Votor Borge tribute on PBS as well. Decisions, decisions..... Confused

I think the show will be hugely benefical.
Oprah reaches such a large audience, and the focus was education and prevention.

It will definitely help some people and stop some scams.

I read someplace that 20/20 is doing a related show this week too. I think it airs tomorrow (Friday).

The more times we put things like Oprah scam awareness show, the more chance of Google spiders directing people to this site as well. All good publicity.

There was supposed to be a Dispatches program last month in the UK, does anyone know if it was aired?
I kept a look out but didn't see anything.

This was a good time for her to run that show with economic conditions so bad. People will be grabbing at straws and could get sucked into some of the scams she reported on.

I can't believe I missed this! I will keep an eye on the tv listings and if I find out when it is on next I'll post the time and date here for other UK people. I hope they repeat it.

I'd love to hear Oprah say the word 'mugu'! Is it on the Diva Channel do you think?

That show sent hundreds of people to Wayne's romance scambaiting site, and he had such a huge influx it shut his server down. Shocked

To have our efforts backed up on such a celebrity show is totally ossom.

I guess this is how the world works -- we do the hard yards, and probably within 3 months it will be known as Oprah's Crusade Against Internet Frauds.

But then I remember what one veteran baiter said to me: "We do what we do to try and put ourselves out of a job." i.e. to create a world where scamming makes no returns so baiters are no longer needed.

All power to the mighty Oprah (BTW, how is that pronounced; is it like o-PRA, or more like Opera?).
