After receiving many emails with dubious memo lines, I finally opened one, and sure enough, whaddyaknow? I have long lost dead relatives in Africa. Nevermind that my people are Irish and Native American (Cherokee).
After almost deleting the email, I replied in broken English that while I would love to assist, I was elderly and my bank would charge a $50.00 U.S. CASH fee to allow me to do what they requested.
I suggested fed-exing the money overnight, in cash only, U.S. Dollars, to me.
I signed off Mrs. Reverend Al Sharpton.
THEY WANTED MY ADDRESS TO SEND THE MONEY!
I'm just sure it would have been counterfeit or some rigged deal where they send a fake money order for more than 50.00, etc, etc, and I chickened out.
NOW I wish I hadn't. YOU GO PEOPLE!
I may even give this another run since I've had my inbox inundated by offers of millions from dead relatives and people with dead relatives, and so on and so forth. |

What you mentioned is what we consider cash baiting and do not do, in the eyes of the law it puts you in exactly the same shoes as a scammer.
I suggest reading the stickies, learning how to bait safe, get a mentor and then grab your very own lad from the surplus forum. |

Welcome Nyghtmare73!
As Donato mentioned, we discourage cash baiting and other illegal activities.
Here is a quote from our guidelines:
Quote: |
Baiting for cash:- PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Due to the possible legal implications involved, but more importantly because the possible dangers posed to baiters, please note that the Administrators and Moderators of 419eater.com no longer permit any discussion relating to cash baits or methods of extracting money from scammers on this board. If you feel the need to discuss such matters then please do so either by this board's Private Messaging system or by email – but be advised, we do not sanction or encourage such discussions and will play no part in furtherance of cash-baiting. |
There are plenty of other ways to have fun with these scammers though. Read up a little, and when you're ready, give it another go. |

That's also exactly why I didn't go any further than the one or two emails - for safety and ethical reasons. This was several months ago and I hadn't even heard of 419 Eater yet - Yesterday was the first time I'd heard of this site, from BoingBoing, when reading an article about a carved Commodore 64 keyboard (BRILLIANT) and the Church of the Red Breast. (OMG!)
I do, however, love the concept of scambaiting as put forth here, and would love to be allowed to lurk and cheer for a little while before going into mentoring and grabbing of lads. |

Well, stick around and read a little more, then when you think you got the hang of how the lads think, jump on in! We're always around to help, it you get stuck, too.
Welcome to Eater! |

If you have the time to look though as much of this site as you can you will soon pick up the evil we do to the lads who want to steal your money
when you think you can bait safely without giving away any of your real life info then give them some hell |

Welcome to your new home
As well as the other comments above, I'd like to suggest you join in a massbait (there are always a few kicking around, and frankly most people are happy to share their lads anyway) as you get all the highs and lows in a collaborative environment - more giggles for your dollar - and you get to see some great powerful modalities at work (dollar chops, false ID/dll's, parceld1rect, safaris, ASEM, shuttles, etc) whilst you're learning the ropes. By reading you'll find different baiters have different scam affinities - some specialise in vanilla NOK straight baits, some live for safaris, others get a kick from cheque lads. You'll find your favourites soon enough!
In this post I've been deliberately slightly cryptic and used some "in" terms to pique your interest and encourage you to investigate - you'll wind yourself laughing in the process, and you may want to buy a coffee-proof cover for your keyboard right now as you'll read things that cause involuntary out-loud laughter |

Thank you guys for the welcome. I suppose what inspired me to impulse email back the scammer was a vague remembrance of the Church of the Red Breast story - it had been emailed to me years ago by someone, and it was actually attributed to the comedian, Mike Meyers.
So, I fired from the hip that time, then quickly realized how persistent these guys are.
I am home now, was at work earlier, and have touch of a stomach flu, and so am laying on the couch, laptop in hand, giggling myself even sicker than I was! I've been poking around the Hall of Shame, the Trophy ROom, and the letter archives.
I would like to say one of the reasons I think I'm drawn to this is the fact my spouse is in law enforcement, as are many of my extended family members. Also, I deal with criminals and sorry arseholes every day at my job (I work for an attorney and have for years). I can appreciate that someone out there is of the same mindset - waste as much time and resources of the criminal element as possible. I've witnessed the car scam destroy the small church I attended - remember the scam where a California Millionaire died and left all his luxury cars to the faithful, for sale of course, at a nominal charge? All you had to do was write a deposit check or pay a cash deposite and the Cadillac or Lincoln of your dreams would be delivered shortly. I've had countless people I thought were friends try to such me into pyramid scams, and I've had people answer craigslist ads for car parts that I've listed, and I've been irritated and annoyed at every one of these attempts. Especially the one that hit our church. I wonder how silly do these people think I am?
I suppose I'd just had enough when I got the random 419 emails. LOL
I shall continue to lurk and applaud for now. I'm trying to decide how much time and resources I myself have considering I work full time, have a spouse, children, a writing hobby, and well.... a lot going.
Still... this sounds like the best fun a person could have with the internet...
*salutes and resumes lurking* |

Hi Nyghtmare73, remember to have fun with this and when you do get to baiting the lads always remember it's their time that should be spent on the bait not yours ....
Word of caution ... pay particular attention to posts about "can I get this guy arrested ... I know a policeman/lawyer/FBI agent" because the answer 999 times out of 1,000 is no you can't!

Welcome N73, hopefully when you've finished lurking you'll come over to the dark side, there are many ways to frustrate a lad, all being well something amongst them will float your boat.
On the other hand, you might find you can let of steam helping from a legal point of view, knowledge of the legal profession and the law enforcement side would allow you to assist in the 'can I get this person arrested' threads.
Hope to see you baiting soon! |

I'm trying to decide how much time and resources I myself have considering I work full time, have a spouse, children, a writing hobby, and well.... a lot going. |
I have a full time job, about 45 to 50 hours a week, I have 2 small children and a teenager as well as a wife who wants things done. I also write quite a bit (on scam related forums and in emails) and I still get lots of time for baiting, no time for sleeping, but heaps of time to slow down scammers
Welcome to the house of lad pain, please pull up a lad, then promptly sit on him, you will find it is lots of fun |

Yeaaahhhh the entire arresting people would be a tough one. While I'd love to see them all rounded up and thrown in the clink, the truth is it would be very difficult, if not impossible. After all, even with pix of these morons, how do you KNOW that's the mugu in question and not some innocent passer by harassed into posing? You may not have photographic proof of the criminal in question, and if you do, then what? How do you prove any one person is responsible for the scam? A lot of what evidence you'd have would be purely circumstantial.
Sounds like the best can be done by the Average Joe Baiter is to keep them busy with false leads.
Dunno how much help I can be from a law enforcement/legal standpoint as each state in the U.S. has their own version of state law - i.e., a lawyer in Arizona may not be familiar with the law in Nevada or California.
Still, I'll try to do what I can on that side of it. *G* I do have friends on the drug task force team that work undercover, they also bust kiddie porn rings and other seedy and disgusting criminals, so I might can get some pointers from them on leading folks down the primerose time wasting path. *EG*
But hey, at least I know the difference between a phishing scam and a 419. :-p That's got to be helpful!
And don't worry. I came over the dark side a loooooong time ago. Bwahahah. Nothing I love more than messin' with a criminal's head. Sometimes, they make it soooooo easy. Its hard to pass up.... |

Oh yeah - In thinking about what sort of business persona I could develop to be in character ( and being in character for me is easy - my top hobby is fictional/fantasy cooperative writing which requires one to truly immerse themselves in a character to be believable), I'm mulling around a lucrative but fictional cattle and sheep ranching and breeding business. Its something I could research fairly easily and could bluff my way through fairly well.
OH OH! I also do manipulated images! We use that quite frequently at the writing site! I LOVE Adobe Photoshop! I can put demon wings on an actor, do blood and bruises, scrapes, shadowing, you name it. I've even created Centaurs out of horses and actors! While I doubt we'd need that element here, LOL, still, I could apply my skills to other images! |
