I want to buy a Sony Watchman (the little handheld TVs) and I was curious as to if it would still work after the February 2009 DTV Transition in the USA?

Most likely it's already compatible with digital television signals and if not, check for scheduled updates and make sure its compatible. However, I can give you one piece of sound advice: avoid buying Sony if you can. They have some of the highest fauly product ratings I've ever seen.

well basically no one else makes little portable tvs.

and people still have these 20 year old watchmans that work perfectly

The Sony Watchman will not work in Feb 2009. There aren't that many options at the moment but I'm sure as time goes on there will be.
