To get an accurate account on how many we really have?

It is too hard to do as some members don't log in but once a month and some are on a small vacation/workstress/RL needs/sick/time off so even if you have the exact number of active members, it's just a picture of that moment, 2 hours later you could be off by 10 or 20 members already.
And even if.. why?

Many people do come back after some time off. So, it wouldn't be nice if they came back to a deleted account.

I know, but it's useless, not accurate no matter what you do, see it as an organic structure it keeps changing with the time/publications/other distractions as it runs lower during the Olympics and other long lasting sports events. But everyone who was once a member will spread the word anyway whether they're baiting or not.
How many leaves on an average oak tree ? Is about the same problem Laughing

I've taken breaks before myself. Sometimes RL gets in the way. I know it's going to happen again too. I don't know when, but that seems to be the nature of life.

I am talking about members who have been inactive for over a year. Esp those who have never posted and never log in.

there you will find some fun oddity's, some people forget their password and simply sign up again, some don't like their name and do the same, some will make two or three members so they can pretend to be someone else or escape their mistakes they made in the forum, there will be some pollution in the member files, but I still don't see the reason why you would want to go that far to get a fictive number?
Even people that do log in sometimes just read up and don't post, we have several members that have only 400 posts and have been a member since the beginning and once they find out that they can read half the forum without loging in they don't bother to do so unless they have a question.
But to see where we would get with this question, let's assume that there are 15.000 members active according to your info, now what?

I believe they do cull the members who never actually do anything. But if a member who was active at one point takes a break, I don't see the need to close their account.

We (Rover) do cull from time-to-time, which is why the number jumps around the 20k mark. Clearly we don't have 20k active members. Some sign up and are never heard from again, but, as others mentioned, we give them the benefit of the doubt and leave them on the rolls for a while.

I understand your point, but not sure what we would really achieve because the number would only reflect those who had logged on (even once) in the past year. That doesn't make them an active baiter. Conversely, posting 10x a day doesn't make you an active baiter necessarily -- I mean, just look at JoJo. Then, in the middle you have those that never post, but read a lot and get good ideas and then bait quietly -- some might think they aren't active, even though they get a lot out of the forum.

We do not remove members who have been active in the past, just because RL may take them away for a while. We do periodically clean out the joint and get rid of inactive/never posted members. Why does this concern you?

Inactive members are much easier to moderate than active ones.

I'm Obsessive Compulsive and like things neat and tidy.

I came up with a few other ideas like we could have a program that sorts by date & then divides the names into inactivity periods of 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year, and greater than 1 year.

From there we could have a program that sorted it in ascending order for number of posts/logins.

If we sorted it that way it would be easier to tell who is doing what
