How to sell online safe/Ebay help needed

Times are tough and I would like to sell some stuff over the internet (1920-1930 singer sewing machines), but being a member here doesn't help then Wink

I have no Ebay account, no PayPal or even a credit card, how should I set it up so I'm safe, my money is safe, without bending the law too much.
Any hints welcome. Thanks

It isn't bending the law at all. It takes about 3 days for you to link a paypal account to your credit/debit card. Just follow the instructions, it's very easy. Obviously you've got experience of scams, so just keep an eagle eye.

Well you didn't mention a debit card, and you never ruled out an Ebay account either.

If you won't give any financial info online then you can't use ebay. It's actually pretty safe, I've been using it for years without a hitch and Paypal will cover yo as well.
However you could advertise with someone like craigslist online and ask for cash when the customer picks up.

@craig007 sorry, I'll see what Ebay wants to know about me so I can register there, I guess if their only payment option is PayPal, I'm not using it.

@ Rodus Craigslist might work, I'll have a look there too.

^^ The joy of Craigslist is the number of new lads you will get wanting to send you cheques for you to cash and forward to their shipping company. Very Happy

You'll be able to paper a wall very quickly, and have fun annoying a lad

Craigslist-Gumtree if you are in the UK. There are also ebay front store that sell stuff on ebay for you for a %. You may wanna look into that. Another thought you may want to find a specialist (or auction house) to sell them-but with anything at the moment there is probably more sellers than buyers.

paypal does not cover sellers

Actually I'd avoid ebay myself if you're feeling anxious. Ebay are busy trying to alienate their sellers and leaving all the risk in their hands. Viz - you *have to* offer paypal as a payment method. You *may not* offer WU as a payment method. Ho Hum...

With sewing machines (and nearlt 2000 of them Wink

), I'm guessing the postage will be expensive, so you'll be looking to sell fairly locally, so how about the old-fashioned method of local newspapers?

You should read the ebay message boards. All the sellers are complaining about paypal. Ebays seller protection is a joke.

The safest way for you to operate a E-bay // paypal account is to set up a VISA debet account, with your bank or credit union. I use a credit union and there are ZERO fees..
But the idea of a debet account is if something goes arse-up, they can only get what's in there. And you can control that amount electronically, by adding or transferring funds from one account to another.
it's also handy if you also offer Direct Deposit, or buy something using DD
E-bay or pay pal, will automatly deduct fee's or deposit buying fee's into the account.

As a seller e-bay insist that you offer paypal, which as a seller will cost you 3% of the sales fee, Your listing / advertisings fees, you will pay regardless of a sale or not.
With a large item sewing machine , furniture, etc, you can also offer
cash on collection, saving the paypal fee, and you also meet the buyer.

You will also need an e-mail account with your selling name, to get electronic generated e-mails from e-pay and paypal with regard to bidding and sales advice. It's also what your buyers will use to communicate with you, and you them.

The big advantage with E-bay is people know it's there, and that's where they look when they want something. A yahoo web site is fine, but knowone will know about it, and it won't get any traffic.
