I tried reporting the site to MSOL and included the link that Sid gave, but I got the response

I can completely understand MSOL on this, as the site doesn't actually do anything fraudulent and you can register a non-profit making organization in Illinois for $75. I was hoping they'd have a look in the mailboxes and find something incriminating, but obviously not. I guess they'd need to be very careful if closing down an apparently legit church website, particularly in the litigious USA - they could end up providing his retirement fund if he won.

Have anything incriminating, Sid? If yes, I'll bet MSOL will close it like a shot.

Indeed it should be closed, and I for one certainly deal with sites like this.

The only problem is that it's a legitimate-looking church website that doesn't violate MSOL's AUP (there's nothing nasty bill, so your baking will remain barf-free Laughing

).

I'm not familiar with USA law, but they hold freedom of speech pretty highly, and I think MSOL would need a good reason to act.

I don't think it's illegal for a convicted felon to become a "minister" (particularly in the USA, I believe).

So, as I tell my mentees, we need solid proof of the website being involved in fraud - guilt by association isn't enough

Once again I typed before my turn, I'll have a look there later to see if I can figure out an angle to get the needed evidence while "baiting" them maybe?
It is so boring to wait for dough to rise that I'm responding to almost every entry now, I'll better myself. Embarassed

Just a thought and i can't recall their name-but i'm pretty sure they've been mentioned here-that there is a group that baits kiddy fiddlers and hands them over to the police once they've arranged a 'meeting'. Maybe it's something that they would like a look at?

No I haven't made any attempt to research this situation. All I know is what appears in the Wired article. I've been out this weekend and am just now getting caught up.

In the US, anyone can open up a church or religious charity without oversight by a government organizations. However, charities are not tax exempt until they have filed and have had approved a 501(c)3 exemption with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Naturally, there are a lot of scams out there from "Christian" organizations. Because of that, many legitimate charities voluntarily submit to financial audits and have that data published to the giving public. This webpage makes no such claim, so let the giver beware.

It is not wrong to start a charity and solicit funds on the web. We have no proof that this scum is using his website to solicit victims. So his ISP may not be compelled to do anything about the website.

I just went back and re-read the Wired article. Clarification:

. A couple of point's

Firstly most of the people that deal with this sort of thing are NOT CONTACTABLE. Which might sound a bit strange, until you consider the nature of there work, Which is 99% undercover. So your not about to see an office in the phone book for "Child Protection Agency" or see a group of people wearing CPA jackets.. BUT they are out there.

If you find evidence of child abuse, send a LINK ONLY to a web site or an e-mail address, to AFP, FBI, or similar. Do not send evidence, written or photographic. As strangely enough, you yourself could be charged with dealing , transporting, or felicitating in child porn . You will NOT GET A REPLY, from anyone.. But in months to come you will hear about a child Porn ring, that has been smashed. Sometimes this takes months or years, But there not interested in the casual lookers, they want the main people, and more often then not, To get to that level, you have to contribute to the group, to finally get to the ringleaders. This takes considerably time..
Then when there sure , they swoop, and get the organisers computers, not so much for the Porn content, BUT for the credit card details of the members. And they can and do lead to knocks on doors all over the world, in the middle of the night, all at the same time.
This happened a few months ago, and it made world news. and probably all started with a simply E-mail address, being sent to an agency somewhere in the world..
