Job applicants like Williams were supposed cash a check for about $3,000. He would keep $200 of that as his pay, then visit a wire company to send the remaining $2,500 back to the company who wrote him the check in the first place. |
Nice article shame the journo doesn't own a calculator. |

What's the catch? Days after wiring away the $2,500, Ken's bank would be calling to let him know the check he had cashed was a phony -- it bounced and he must pay it back. |
Doesn't anyone proofread any more? |

^^ Proofread: having someone else scan your article for mistakes/ language errors before it gets published.
Check received: $3,000
Vic gets to keep $200
He's supposed to send back the remaining $2,500 ...
That's not English, that's math |

[off topic]Even better to send them extra $$ to cover for the additional traveling costs they have to make picking up their payment at a WU Secure outlet, several miles out of town. [/off topic] |

Interesting - this is past tense and says that he did and didn't cash the check:
Quote: |
What's the catch? Days after wiring away the $2,500, Ken's bank would be calling to let him know the check he had cashed was a phony -- it bounced and he must pay it back. |
This says that he avoided the scam.

Our investigation convinced Williams to steer clear of the offer. |
The story isn't very clear IMHO. |

To me it's obvious he didn't fall for the scam:
Quote: |
We called the bank on Williams' check and confirmed the account was not valid. Williams was not too surprised, said he had suspicions all along.
"There was too many red flags, and that's why I called you," he said. |
ETA: "and confirmed" also should be "and they (it?) confirmed"
If even a cloggy can spot the language errors something must be wrong. |

This part, worded something like this would have been much more clear:
Had Ken wired the money, his bank would have called him within days to let him know that the check that he cashed was counterfeit and that he would have to pay all of the money back. |
