I'll back up Tasty's comment about the Beta/VHS rivalry. We discussed that in one of my computer sci classes when we were on the topic of emerging/competing tech. The professor said that one of the major reasons why Beta was abandoned was because the porn industry chose VHS and shortly after that, Beta was done for.

^^^ That was the whole point of mentioning it, too, I think. He was saying that while you may have a better product, that may not exactly matter.

Your main premise would be harder to refute. It is true that porn always grabs as much bandwidth and media as it can, but my feeling is that it doesn't drive innovation. Nobody thought "I'll invent the webcam so I can look at naked girls". There are also a lot of other drivers that push bandwidth - like music and video piracy. Now if your argument was that bandwidth and media improvements were driven by illicit/naughty content, then I'd have to agree. But not innovations, and not just porn.

The one field that is driven by porn - teledildonics - seems to have sunk without a trace.

Alright, I think I will clairfy my arguement a bit. Your post was pretty good, and made some salient points.

I would conceed that perhaps the porn industry itself doesn't actually develop the products (the actual hardware). However, the industry is very adept at using and driving usage for products that benefit both delivery and accessablitiy of the products.

Here is a really good article about innovation and porn. Again, this IS safe for work, and doesn't have any pictures. It does have the word "porn" in the story, so keep that in mind.
