As far as "cleaner" perhaps. But to each their own. As far as malicious content goes, I am willing to hazard a guess that people that are perusing for porn have already figured there are hazards afoot.

Pop-ups (pun intended), cookies, worms, trojan (another pun) horses, and virusus are just par for the course.

If you are trying to shut porn down because of these issues, good luck.

And frankly, without porn the internet would still be dazzeling us with 14.4k modems, limited video capablities, no VOIP, or most of the intereactive features we enjoy today.

Again, the best method to avoid the troubles are to stop "investigating" various porn sites. Rolling Eyes

I only made one. The rest were not snarky.

Everything I said has been true. Interenet innovation has largely been driven by porn. Broadband usage, video on demand and pretty much all of the other "neat" things we enjoy were either devised by the porn industry, or a demand to develop them was driven by the demand for porn.

As far as checking age some sites require the use of a credit card as well as an age limit. As you can probably tell, my tolerance for those that want to shut down porn is rather low. And I don't really even like porn. But I do like choice, and being able to make adult decisions on my own.

Unless there are children involved, or unwilling participants, I think it ought to be up to those who want to watch it.

There are plenty of programs to limit the ablity of porn to be accessed on the market. If the OP is concerned about accesablitiy, I would suggest he/she install one.

Secondly, as it has been stated the law is only for those sites hosted in the US. Most are not now, the servers have been shifted to more "accomdating" locals.

I'd have to disagree with you there. Even dating back to the old BBSes, the internet was used to do a lot more than porn. And should they take it all away, the vast amount of online gamers, social networkers, political (and non-political) ranters, search engines, and software/media stores would keep the internet alive and thriving. I think its just a generalization of internet users that most of them are sexless morons who get off on pixelated images on the computer screen. Sure the internet has made porn more accessible and private, and perhaps a couple lonely folks have rallied for innovations based solely on porn, but porn isn't the driving force behind internet innovations.

You sir/lady are WAY off base. Do a simple google search for "Porn Drives Internet Innovation" or "Porn Drives Broadband demand". Porn IS a driving factor for much innovation in technology.

Why do you think "webcams" became popular? Because grandma wanted to see her grandkids? No, because someone wanted to see someone else naked.

And your opinion of who views porn is slightly off base. As a multi-billion $ industry, it's not just greasy old men in trench coats doing the buying. Unless you live in a monestary someone around you has/will view/buy/watch porn at some point in their lives.

I enjoy a healthy debate as much as the next person, but don't make your statements seem so "as-a-matter-factly" because that's a poor method of informing someone and only makes them lose respect for you. Well, if you want to debate, let's debate.

I've posted 2 safe for work articles that support my case. You offer up statements:

Both rather broad and speculative. And your second statement is more of a horse has left the barn arguement. The reason people like the technology they have is because of the innovations driven by porn. Without the innovation, people wouldn't miss what they don't have.

Back during the BB's days, unless you were a researcher at a university, there wasn't much to do online. But then someone figured out that you could share images. And suddenly 7.2k baud modems weren't all that fast. And away we go. Oh yeah, those pictures were generally not safe for work... Laughing

And snarky is different from confidence. I made 1 snarky comment. The rest were/can be backed up with outside research/articles.

Now, one could argue that NOW there is more innovation that is NOT dependant upon the porn industry. But the base technology that much rests on was developed to satisfy the desire for porn. That is indisputable. We can quibble about the percentage, but you can't argue against it.

If you have some articles that do, please post them. I would love to read them. (And I am not kidding. I don't belive they exist).

I will say this. Email/forums/online chats are much more difficult to hold without appearing either sarcastic, or snarky. What one interprets as snarky may not have been written to convey that message.

That is one of the reasons we have emoticons. Other ways that you may wish to consider in order not to have your posts interpreted as snarky are to (a) omit the references to feeling snarky, (b) avoid capitalising to stress points where you're telling others they are wrong, and (c) stop telling others they are wrong simply because they disagree with you.

LetsGoYanks, your only contribution to this thread, which was off-topic, did nothing to move the discussion forward, and was equally snarky. If you have an issue with how someone is posting, please PM a mod, or use the report function.

As far as the capitalization goes, I was using that to actually support Ex, that many current innovations might not directly be a result of porn. Past advances however are directly related to the demands/innovations of the porn industry. Still waiting for a rebuttle to the articles that I posted. Haven't seen any.

As for Yanks' post, I am sure he/she will appreciate you finding it amusing, but that's not the determining factor for whether it departed from the standard of debate we like to ensure is maintained at Eater.

Well, I can't argue about what is/isn't proper decorum on this board. I just thought his post was amusing.

I would conceed the point that "it is indsiputable" is telling someone that they are wrong. And in-fact that is what I was doing. And I'm still waiting for a response that would contridict my prior posting supporting my viewpoint.

Rather ironic that there seems to be a feeling(on this board) that it is either impossible to be wrong, or wrong to feel that your viewpoint is above dispute. It's not like we are arguing about the existance of God, or morality issues. Those areas are much more gray, and many times the answer can never be conclusivly proven either way. Porn affecting technology is not a debate of faith. It has been researched, studied, and documented.

In this instance, there is a right, or a wrong. And to argue that porn was not a driving force in the development of many technologies we use today is well...wrong. It is neither a arguement to debate the morality of porn, or the impact of porn on society.

But the contention that Ex raised that other factors were as influential as porn in the early development of the internet beyond a research tool for universities is revisionist history. Sex sells, and it has been a huge factor in the development in VOD, Broadband, and compression technology (video transfer).

I would post more, however being at work rather limits my ablity to google "porn" for olbvious reasons. As another member of eater recently posted there are RL consequences for our actions here on eater. If anyone requires more documentation, I can look it up later at home. More time for "research" Laughing

I do appreciate your post however.

I don't think that is what we strive for. It's more a matter of encouraging members to respond to each other with respect. There are lots of ways of saying things. Politely disagreeing with someone is perfectly acceptable, and avoids a lot of problems. I think most dialogs here are like that, and I think members appreciate it.

We don't want Ex. getting pissed off at you and ignoring his lads while he concentrates on trying to send you on a safari. Wink

I meant nothing bad by it. It's a hilarious website, and thought I'd share since you were on the topics of puns. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Sorry if it thread derailed, but real conversations don't always stay 100% on topic. I just said "I thought this was funny" so that it didn't look like I was trying to attack his puns.

Sorry, I don't know much about porn legality/furthering of internet technology. My link was just mean to be taken as some food for thought.
