Steadfast televison are currently developing a factual documentary about 419 scams for BBC1.

We are interested in talking to victims of all 419 scams, particularly the 'Wash, wash' scam (where black paper is dipped in a 'special' solution. The tricksters ask for money for more solution and you are enticed with receiving £500,000) and the lottery scam.

@MrSteadfast, If your project does indeed stress the pain and suffering - emotional as well as financial - that scamming causes the victims, you will be doing a good thing. If on top of that you educate people on how to spot scams and what to do if they have been scammed, that will be even better.

IMO, education is the key. Make people aware of the risks and possibilities, and at the same time show them where to go for help and advice.

That is exactly our purpose to educate potential victims. But at the same time we would want to expose some tricksters.

The more replies I get from victims, the more evidnece we have against them.

There's plenty of evidence, but it rarely helps to bring the scammers to justice.
I've long thought that the best way of getting the warning out to a lot of people in the UK, would to have a character in Eastenders (or another soap) fall for a 419 scam.

^^^^^Brilliant idea. Hopefully a mod will investigate this further, for Eastenders, Corrie, Emmerdale or Hollyoaks.

BBC Eastenders website FAQ says:
'Q: Can I send in storyline ideas for the show?
A: EastEnders does not accept ideas on storylines for the programme. Only the regular team of writers and script editors on the programme work on EastEnders storylines.'

but I'm sure a well worded letter to the relevant channels might do the trick.

EDITED TO ADD: Of course, it would probably sound better coming from scamwarners.

/\/\ I could just see Norris in Coronation Street send off his weekly pension to Charles Soludo, keeping it secret from Rita and Emily. Eventually Roy Cropper would end up pointing out the 'logical inconsistencies' in the whole scenario.

God i'm even starting to talk like him now....

(I do know a member of the crew on Coro, when I see him I'll ask how ideas get into the plot, and via who).
