Hello! Thought it was about time I delurked, having received the email recently.

There is a reference number or two here. Is it *possible* a scammer could have uniquely identified his/her scam spam, or is that beyond them?

I don't think it's for identification purposes, rather just to beef the scam out to make the mail more professional.

Numbers are just put in to make it look good, if you put the reference number into Google you gets loads of hits. (about 2,200)
and the winning number brings back 2,100

so, you are not alone....

It's a question of how to maintain one's anonymity while baiting. Do you guys use e.g. anon. proxies?

And also, are there any forums etc. which are notorious for email addresses being harvested, to quickly get the scam mails coming?

To maintain our anonanimity, most mods recommend a papersack with eyeholes cut out.

Or, you could also use gmail. Or a combination of both.

you will find loads of info in the stickies in the various sections of this forum.
read the stickies to learn to 'bait safe' ( and one thing you will need is a email address with none of your real info that does not send your IP address ( like gmail or hushmail ).
get a mentor, they are free and some of them dont bite or have had their shots.

Well, I thought I might as well use the lottery scam mail, and the lad has just sent back the 'fill this form in' email. Anyone got tips on how this scam goes/a good way to kick it off?

I start out by saying something like, yes this sounds interesting, what should I do now? Give him one bit of info at a time, and ask lots of questions. Smile

The best way to deal with a "fill the form" email is to ask questions.

One question per email (well, two at the most), and one email per day - no matter how many your lad sends you. Ask questions about the questions on the form. "What does this mean?" "Do you want my home address or my mailing address, because the postman won't deliver to my home." Stuff like that. Start out sounding "real" (questions a real vic would ask). Once you establish yourself with the lad as a slightly dim and possibly forgetful victim, he will start being very helpful, and eventually you can get him to do your work for you. Wink

One of the principles of baiting is never to do more work than the lad. As long as he is on script, he isn't reading your emails thoroughly, and he isn't taking much time in sending you his response. So don't put a lot of effort into your early emails to him. Match his involvement, but at a lower energy level. Twisted Evil

dont worry if you do lose him because you can just rebait him from a new email addy and use a new name ( and you will know a bit more about him next time Wink

*waves* Hi! Don't be fooled or anything, I'm not exactly an oldie here, but... hi anyway!

For Super Extra-Strength Anonymity<sup>TM</sup>, I use Gmail and TOR (The Onion Router; actually I use it often anyway, so it just happens to be turned on when I bait). As for losing lads, I lost an awful lot before I hooked a few, but I've got some lovely baits playing out at the moment. Got a nice one going with a brain-dead woman who can't even work out how to use WU (imagine that!) and a barrister who would "is a lawyer and will not want to involve in anything that is illegal". Riiiiight.
