Alright he says he was originally from Belgium, but now lives in Ghana, Africa. She met him on a dating site called "dateahero". I decided to pose as a girl and send him an email saying I saw his profile and got his email from a comment he made on another persons profile. I'm not sure why but my mom gave him her number are there any scams he can do with it? Also he said "hopefully next time we won't have to rely on phone lines and i'll be there in person" and that he was having trouble with money. Funny thing about that is he said he was a contractor and an architect and he said he loved my mom no matter how rich she was. I swear this guy is stupid. Here's his response to me i'll attach the four pictures he sent as well - there all small and blurry a good sign there fake/photoshopped.

Those are the pictures he sent. He stopped emailing my mom and insisted on only talking on the phone & text. When my mom asked him to show her some pictures of him with something noticeable in Ghana he couldn't.

First of all: Check the IP. Does it point to Ghana? It might, as it's one of the places we quite often deal with here. But if it points somewhere else you've already caught him lying.

Second: As an architect he should be educated enough to know how to write "terrible", and not "treble", which is music-related (see here and here).
Also other obvious mistakes shouldn't have occurred if he really was an architect, which, from my understanding, is not a job for stupid people.

Third: He tells you it's his first time to date on-line, which, as you know, is a lie. This doesn't make him a scammer, but it doesn't make him an honest man either.

Fourth: Judging by those pictures I wouldn't say that they depict a Belgian person.

How do I check the IP he sent the email on gmail.

Well, have a look at the headers. If you are lucky he may have sent through SMTP (unlikely, but not impossible), then you might be able to get the right IP. Otherwise of course you won't.

Top right of the email, there is a little blue arrow, click on that and a menu drops down. On that menu you should be able to view the original.

If he's Belgian he should be writing in French (or in German or something, there are other languages but at least he should know French)
Anyway English should not be his first choice...

I take it your mum knows that it is a scam already, if not sit her down and show her that it is.

You could point out the things mentioned above but you could also try some searches for yourself, search on the email address, name, phone number or parts of the script and you will most likely find something.

Of course, showing your mum the correspondance between you and the scammer is also pretty compelling proof anyway.

What you have done with him is what we call baiting, it wastes his time and keeps him from people just like you dear mother, if you would like to join in we can show you the ropes, for starters take a look at the romance sticky, there is a link in my signature line, it will give you a good start, other than that we have a mentor system and a great tutorial section that we call the Eater University, there is a link to that in my signature line as well.

Thanks - I have had a couple years experience with this, but it wasn't scammers (that I know of) and I didn't check there IP before. It was more of a time killer for me. I will check into the stickies and the other stuff. My mom knows she could have been scammed and she realizes she was blinded by his words. I guess when you scam a bunch of people you get good at typing and saying things people want to hear.

Exactly right

Did your mum send any money to him or just her details, either way she is likely to be targeted by other scams, a common one for somebody who has sent money is to be told the scammer is in custody and that your money can be returned, there will be fees involved and so the scam begins again.

If they have any personel details they may try a scam email that has her information to make it look legitimate, she should be mindfull of anybody she meets online anyway and the experience with this scammer may actually be a good lesson, hopefully not an expensive one

Hi Justsayno! You are awesome for doing what you've done. Your mom might be hurt a wee bit now, but once she realizes you've saved her a lot more emotional pain and maybe financial ruin, she'll be forever grateful.

Ray is a scammer. The fact that he came on to you as he's supposed to be devoted to your mum, is proof enough. Please ask your mother to cease all conversations with him immediately. He is a common criminal. Bring her here and show her these replies to your question. If she confronts him and begs for the truth, he is very likely to worm his way back into your mother's heart by either convincing her that we're all against him or that he did what he did out of desperation because he truly loves only her. I have seen scammers do this many times. Your mother is not out of the woods until she's cut him off completely.

Also, you or your mother should post his full username (it's fake of course), his email address and any other first contact emails and pictures that you may have on him. Post them here, on scamwarners.com or on romancescam.com or in all three places. The more the better! The reason we do this is because he is certainly scamming other women at the same time. If someone does a google search for any of his information or lines from what he sends out, it will lead them to the information and proof that he is a scammer.

the only child of my parents they both loved me and cared for me with
much love and gave me all the best things in life even when things
were very rough they still tried their best
to make things ok for me...i feel so lonely that they are no
more...What do you do for a living,i am an independent contractor just
like i told you in my previous mail and i deal on major buildings and
construction of roads,houses,bridge and other major structures.i took
after my late father construction company he was in this line for more
than twenty two years and wanted me to carry on his work...

I find it very interesting although time consuming and energy killing
but i still love my job and i am very good at what i do...To answer
your question about where i am residing at the moment,
Presently i am in Ghana,western part of Africa working on a very huge
project for the government,on a very large land giving to us by the

right and special woman,i just want someone who i can trust and spend

Yup from the way he talks and distinctively puts the three periods after every sentence. And a bunch of his phrases that were in those emails he said to my mom. Is there a reason he wants to chat over the phone instead of email, because he hasn't contacted my mom in a few days. Is there a scam he can do with the phone, because she's talked to him a few times.

It's a lot harder to think quickly when you're talking on the phone. Emails and even IM to a degree give you time to think about your responses. If a scammer is pressing you for an answer on the phone, you might just promise something you will regret later. Evil or Very Mad

Everytime he talks to my mom it's about money and the supposed $50 million he is going to get. And now the conversation is starting to change to where the $50 million he's waiting for is not coming until next wednesday and he needs money to pay for his hotel and to get some important papers from his hotel to get paid the $50 million. So basically he's saying theres important papers in his hotel he needs to get paid, but he can't get the papers until he pays his hotel bill, because he owes the hotel money. He wan't some funds sent to him so that he can move forward and come out to see my mom and collect his money. At the point that he asked for the money my mom hung up on him and he called back and my mom didn't answer but prior to the beginning of the phone call my mom told him that she'd been in areas where there isn't good phone reception and the phone calls dropped off before. So my mom wants to blame it on the phone reception and he thought my mom hung up on him and he called back and left a message saying he knows what she's thinking and that he's not after her money and he's not a scammer. And he says why don't you give me a chance and he just wanted to see how my mom would react if he asked her for a favour. And he said he guessed my mom would let him die, because my mom reacted the way he thought she would. And than he said but you can email me later and I might get back to you.

What my mom wanted to do was email him and pretend when she hung up the phone that the call was dropped, because of bad reception and than she wanted to email him because he did leave her a message saying he wasn't a scammer. She wanted to act stupid and send him an email saying "oh what happened to the call I told you I had bad reception and I guess the phone call dropped and than you called me back and left me a strange message about not wanting my money and that your not a scammer what are you talking about and what do you need from me?" She wants to bait him, but she's new and needs ideas what to say and do.

@ justsayno. It's important that your mother ceases ALL contact with "Ray". No email, no phone, no IM. Nothing. Otherwise he will lay on a huge charm offensive and try to lure her back. If you read through the thread I posted ^^^ you will see that he's a very determined and slick operator, especially if he thinks his victim might be getting cold feet. Ignore him completely and eventually he will give up but in the meantime he will use all the tricks in the book to lure her back. If your mother still needs convincing that Ray is a scammer then show her that thread. He's been at this for a long time.

I don't think it's a good idea for your mother to try and bait him. It's too "personal".

If you've posted all his emails addys I'm sure we'd love to take him on. We have some expert "love baiters" here who like nothing more than giving persistant offenders like this some extra special attention.

Your mother can certainly report him to the various dating sites he's lurking on. Tell them he's a known internet scammer and they should remove his details immediately. Most reputable sites are glad to receive info like this and are happy to cooperate as scammers are a real problem.
