As the parent of an adult with autism, I am very active in autism awareness. Recently I got email from a family in New York who had received a shady-sounding telemarketing call. I just want everyone to know, The Autism Society of America and its chapters do not solicit funds by telephone. In fact, even when they do direct mail, it's only to ASA members.

Autism is a hot topic right now and the crooks are starting to capitalize by calling people. This particular bunch is Autism Spectrum Disorder Foundation. DON'T GIVE MONEY OVER THE PHONE. Their website lists a local Goodwill as their affiliate, but I am pretty sure ASA is going to get that knocked down.

ASA is also not affiliated with Autism Speaks, aka the Jenny McCarthy bunch. In my opinion they are doing more harm than good, but alas, they have kept it legal, however misleading their claims.

Thanks for the heads-up, Kacky. I also have an autistic kid and it's just infuriating. It is bad enough to deal with the Jenny McCarthy types, let alone this type of thing.

Those birdhouses are nice--we get something similar in one of the stores nearby. The birdhouses are built by developmentally disabled adults in the area.

oooo, I didn't know there was a stop Jenny movement. I really can't stand her, or anyone who makes declarations about autism based on one kid who's all of 4 years old.

Who's building birdhouses in your area, I would love to see them! This workshop is a lifesaver for these guys. They recently brought in a gentleman who's 61 and this is his first job. My guy is 24. His schools all declared him retarded because he's nonverbal (he uses FC but we never found a school that bought into it) has tantrums and needs personal care, but he'd always done crafts with me hand over hand , so I knew he'd like it.

@ Kacky I can't remember the name of the group off top of my head. I'll try to find out. I need a birdhouse for next spring anyway so I'll go somewhere that I know sells those houses.

Mine is only 6 going on 7, has issues with verbal communication as well and yes does have some tantrum issues now and then. Fortunately she goes to a school that has a good understanding of this and work with what she needs instead of labeling her "retarded" and being done with it. She also really enjoys arts and crafts related activities.

BTW, to keep it somewhat scam related, I did once get a scam email that used an "autism research" format--a type of check scam. I passed them along to another baiter and tried to get a response out of the lad, but unfortunately the lad never returned the emails. Confused

That was the first time I'd seen autism used in a lad's script. It really was kind of surreal.

That's a strange website, they send the money they make to "Red Cross Emergency Communities for Hurricane Katrina relief" and the link there brings you right to" Error 404 - Not found The document you requested is not found." I might have to snoop there a bit more Twisted Evil

I think that's a friendly website bill2, but the dead link is still a bit of a cause for concern.
