I received a scam e-mail today about a British Online Lottery. I haven't been at this long, but I haven't received any of them from the US. The person that sent this has a Univ. of Houston e-mail address. Is that common? Sure this person would be harder to bait than someone in Africa / Asia where the language is more of a barrier?

It does appear to originate to the University of Houston, but notice that the reply to address is a standard hotmail address. It's a slightly strange one, so I'm making an educated guess.
I think that some student may be mass mailing this format out on behalf of someone else... possibly for a small payment.
There is the possibility that the address is being spoofed, but I don't know much about that side of things so it's speculation I'm afraid.

If it was me, I'd reply to the hotmail address and get hold of his script, then check the headers. See what that tells you. I get the feeling that it's not US based at all, although some lads do operate in the states. Bang off a reply and see what happens.

Don't be led to believe that a UK / USA etc based lad will be any easier / harder to bait because of better language skills. Most African based lads have perfectly good English skills anyway, it's one of the primary languages in many African nations.

EDIT: Have you tried googling the University email address? The results can be quite telling.

Houston is mugu central. Lots of lads there. Used to see a lot of fake cheques from that area. If your Nigerian lad has a 'diplomat' in the US, he's quite likely to reside in Houston.

Psychadelia: Do you think this is a low level lad, pushing out the initial formats? I'm just put off by the university address. Confused

I've seen this before often, it's quite common. Catchers, yes. Either studying at the Uni, or using the Uni's network somehow. I'd guess the Uni has wireless access, and if it's there, the local mugun will exploit it. How hard can it be to get the WPA password?

I don't know if there's any mileage in sending the mail, with headers, to the University's network admininstrator. I seem to recall it was tried before, and met with indifference.

It's just a standard Lotto format Gifford, why not have a go yourself? You'll learn from it. It's not like you can really mess it up... the worst that can happen is that he drops you.

For your first bait, just try and learn how this scam works. Reply to him like a normal victim would... Wow, I won? How much? Ask him a few questions, just one per email. See if you can bait him for over a week for starters. Enjoy! Smile

It's more likely that the mail.uh.edu email address has been hacked or phished. Forwarding the original email to the University IT people would be the way to go. The intial scam email is often sent from an account that the lad is prepared to lose as opposed to the reply-to email address.

Baiting the hell out of the hotmail account would also be the way to go!

Some insight into this: Freshman are easy as hell to phish.

It just happened here at my school. It seems that a few weeks before the start of school each year, some emails will come out that are asking everyone to update their information, confirm it, whatever; pretty detailed and targeted phishing directed at students.

Out of the tens of thousands sent, a handful (usually freshman) will respond with their info. They then have access to the students email account. Schools usually have good standing with other ISP's and their scams flow out. It happened this year so bad that gmail, hotmail, yahoo, verizon, and others all blacklisted our servers. Two weeks later were still trying to get everyone able to send email everywhere.

^^ Ok jjb, where you sending him? Wink Interesting prospect, come to think of it. Getting a Houston lad on safari.

They don't need to phish addies from unclued students. Addies to spoof when sending out hundreds of formats are easy to come by. All they need is a username and password for the Uni network, a car to park within wireless range, and a laptop. I could be wrong, but this is the most likely scenario IMHO. It's hard to imagine a crooked student thinking he or she would be safe sending out 419 formats from the dorm.
