I am delighted and proud to announce that the mods have decided to award the new golden pith helmet for an outstanding safari to the Chad Three. Very Happy

For anyone who has missed it - where have you been??? Shocked

- the tale of the safari is here and the Chad Three are jojobean, Professor So and So, and YeaWhatever. The bait was discussed and the guys interviewed at length in a recent radio broadcast with Ira Glass for "This American Life" which was widely aired in the US, and you can read about that here. It contains a lively discussion of the ethics of the bait. Laughing

The gold pith is being awarded to mark a safari that is a truly exceptional bait for a number of reasons - the time the lad spent on safari, the considerable effort and excellent collaborative baiting that went into it from the 3 baiters, the degree of interest it provoked on Eater and elsewhere, and finally, the radio interview it led to, which has raised awareness and encouraged new people to bait and educate. Very Happy

If it locks a scammer up or prevents someone from becoming a victim then it's pure gold.

If the public awareness level is increased it doesn't matter if they love you or hate you, all publicity is good!

Wow. I just noticed this thread. Thanks for the honor.

While Jojo, the Prof and I did most of the heavy lifting for this bait, there were many other baiters here that lended a hand to this effort. So, thanks to you guys too (you know who you are).

We also need to thank Western Union. If it were not for their monumental incompetance, this safari might not have happened the way that it did.

Last, but not least, I would like to thank Adamu himself. It was his stupidity and greed that led to the success of this safari and the publicity that it generated. Adamu, if you are reading this now, I just want you to know that we all chipped in and collected a sizable amount of money for you. It has been sent via Western Union to Abeche. Give us a call so we can pass along the simple instructions on how to collect it.

Very true. We were actually in the midst of planning what type of awards to present ourselves with in order to fill the void that has been forming.

Thanks to all of the Mods/Admins for the award. It's definitely an honor to sport one of the first gold piths. Thanks also to the MANY baiters that helped us out with the bait, and to everyone that took the time to read it. Thanks as well to OBL, for her continued efforts to raise awareness of the bait, and to Adamu for being a totally stredded moron for 106 days.

We got some pretty cool trophies over the course of this bait. We have random ethics threads throughout the net discussing it, we have a highly amusing (imo) interview with the three of us laughing our ass off at what would make most listeners cringe, we are now included in the Wikipedia entry for the very definition of scambaiting (thanks to whoever did that one), and now have been given the first of the hopefully many golden pith helmets to be awarded on this site.

Not bad for a few assholes. Smile
