He was smiling... That's right. You know, that, that Luke smile of his. He had it on his face right to the very end. Hell, if they didn't know it 'fore, they could tell right then that they weren't a-gonna beat him. That old Luke smile. Oh, Luke. He was some boy. Cool Hand Luke. Hell, he's a natural-born world-shaker.

One of my favs. He'll be missed.

He was a great actor and a really good guy. He started a business, Newmans Own, which helped cacao farmers in Costa Rica, and donated all the profit to charity. He was a great help to farmers in Central America.

I saw the Sting and Butch Cassidy many times (will watch Bitch Cassidy tonight in his honor), and he was a part of my life.

One evening in the early 1980s when I was in high school, my friend and I were walking east on 63d street in NY towards the Roosevelt Island Tramway fro Central Park. The place was lit up by these huge lights. There was some filming going on, and across the street was Paul Newman, himself. They weren't filming at the time, so I yelled across the street "Good evening, Mr. Newman", and, bless him, he turned, looked right at us and said, with a voice that we knew, "Hi guys, how ya doing tonight?" Makes me smile, still.

What a great guy. He will be missed.

The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke and The Sting were my favourite Newman films. I'll watch one over the weekend.

He was one of those actors who "aged gracefully" and looked as handsome at 70 as he had at 40.

And, oh, those eyes!

And he made a damn good salad dressing.

I was shocked I had no idea he was ill - he was obviously a very private person.

I once had my hair cut in a very upmarket salon in Knightsbridge London and he was in the next chair!!!

The fact that he was married to Joanne Woodward for all those years puts him high in my book. He was definitely not a typical Hollywood type.

A good actor and family man and he did much good for charity through his food business.

As a petrol head I followed his motorsport career, he finished 2nd in the 1979 LeMans 24 hour race. His Newman Haas team has been at the top of Indy Car racing for years.
