So I have this scammer on the line, now what?

I put something on craiglist, and got a scammer. I responded to him saying I would ship it etc and to my surprise, he is going along with it. I didn't think he would respond.

Rather than telling him to F.OFF, what can I do?

Short story:

- I have a GL1 video camera on craigslist
- He wants it, and is willing to pay twice the price (wow what a nice guy)
- He sent me a fake email saying paypal recieved the money. (don't these guys know how to use HTML and make really good fake emails?)
- I sent him back saying "thanks where do I sent the camera"?

My plan is this:

- Take a photo of the camera, in a box and send him the photo.
- Take a picture of his address on top of the box, send him that photo too. This is to make him really think that I am sending the camera.
- Put a brick or something in the box. Maybe a lump of dog shit too.
- Send it to him COD for $40
- Tell him that the $40 is for some sort of "California Equipment Tax" and to accept the parcel he must pay that at his post office when he accepts it. Somehow I must convince him that the tax is out of my hands and he must pay it when he accepts the parcel.

Do you think I can scam the scammer out of $40 + postage for sending him a brick?

- Do I tell him ahead of time about the $40 "Equipment Tax"? Or do I just send it COD and wait until he emails me about the mysterious $40 charge then explain it was nothing I could do and he should go back and pay the $40 for the "camera"?

This will be my first scambait attempt. If it works, it will not be my last.

I've heard of people telling the lads that they cannot ship to Africa due to scams and only COD is available. Then they ship COD a pile of rocks or bricks. I'll let someone else more experienced chime in with more information.

I'm not sure from your description,but if you get the $40 out of this transaction,that is cash baiting,and they don't allow it here.Further,if he has any of your real information,just walk away from it.Never screw with a scammer with your real name,address,e mail etc.

Yeah, forgot to mention cash baiting, that is a definite no-no. However, if he pays $40 for the shipping and gets a box of rocks, that should really make him angry.

Would it still be illegal if it were composted or baked in a pie?

I would do a little more research on one of the various shipping companies here. Some of them have tracking and most of the "goods" get lost or hijacked prior to delivery.

You could also "send" him his "money" back via visatrans or some other secure method.

let's re-look at what you wrote.

Right what does that tell you. The guy's telling you lies, about sending a payment.

Now look at your pay-pal account, Does that show a credit of what-ever the amount was. Answer NO, Of cause it doesn't.

So forget all the fairy stories about sending him box's of brick's. Wake up to yourself. And don't give yourself trouble. And never ever give anyone you don't know your banking details, or any other details for that matter, less they come back and bite you on the arse.

If you want to play the game, Advise him that no deposits have been made in your account. And also ask yourself, what are you doing giving him live account details. He can now make a claim against you, for non-delivery and pay-pal will deduct the amount from your account. No arguments about that.

I really would suggest you ether make sure your pay-pal account has zero in it, and contact pay-pal by phone quickly and inform them of the situation, and hope they believe you.

Then just sit back and reflect, what you have done, and how close you came to loosing money. Then do a LOT of reading on here about just how easy it is to get scammed by professionals.

While weareborg delivery was a little coarse, the information is sound.

Yes you're right. I was responding to a scammer on a whim. I see baiting, real baiting, is hardcore, and for that you need to make sure you are invisible.

Well exactly! I made a fake website once, with fake "horoscopes" and sent it to my girlfriend and there was little chance you could see it was cheap and fake. (I put stuff like - "Make love to your siginifigant other tonight. The stars are in alignment and love is blah blah blah") She would come home from work after reading her "horoscope" and screw my brains out. It was the best website ever.

Don't these scammers know that if you are going to make a fake paypal email and try to scam someone, at least be good at it!!!

I'm just curious, is it possible for someone anonymous to step in and make a lad out of this guy? Or is it too difficult because he may find a link between the baiter and the OP?
