With respect NN, I don't think this thread has been "handled poorly" at all. Quite the opposite in fact. People have felt able to state their point of view in a calm, rational fashion and judging by the number of comments (or gripes if you prefer) it's been a very useful safety valve for people to say what they really think without fear of recriminations.

This is a big, busy board and I think a highly proactive and visible team of Mods is absolutely vital. I've seen too many (non-baiting) boards implode for lack of adequate moderation. I know it's a tough job (been there, done it) especially when you have to suppress your own personal opinions when deciding on how to deal with the various dilemmas and decisions (and idiots) you are obliged to make on a daily basis. Of course you can't keep all the people happy all the time but when there are clearly a lot of UNhappy people then discussions like this should be actively encouraged IMO in order to clear the air and clarify certain issues.

When I went to bed last night this thread had been locked without explanation. When I woke up this morning I was glad to see it was open again. Nuff said.

I disagree completely with you. Maybe you missed the first 3 pages Gnasher, so that's okay. Things could always be handled better. Starting a conversation with a hand grenade always gets the wrong sort of attention.

Oh I agreed with everything else, except the obvious suggestion I made at how we all decided to snark first then fix the issue. It was handled poorly. We'll do better next time.

The truth is the system isn't perfect. I don't know of a system that is. I'm as fallible as the next human. We try our best to keep things as lad-topic related as possible.

In general chat, generally speaking we only ask that we all get along and try not to piss each other off too much. The owners of this forum have particular criteria that we do not like to see. That particular request has evolved with the growth of the forums. I personally don't see this as such a dictatorial request.

I completely agree that being too PC does sterilise the atmosphere of the forums, but we're all very not PC. We're baiter's. We use religion and politics to manipulate lads. We use derogatory remarks of sexual orientation to incite a response. We humiliate and demoralise lads at the basest level of humanity in order for us to have a laugh at their expense. We are so far from being politically correct is really is funny that we do censor certain material posted in these forums. We do this because it's not against our chosen enemy, and the fight is not here. I don't want to make things personal by offending a fellow baiter's beliefs. Why would anyone?

It's a very twisted and bizarre dichotomy of our ethos. I wish I could make sense of it, or at least try and rationalise this to make more sense. Unfortunately I can't. Not that I won't. I just can't. I wouldn't know where to start.

Being sensible adults we should be able to question the reasons behind a decision. I have no problem with being wrong. I can't speak for other mods, but I know that if one of us make a bad call or decision, we call each other out on it. We do yell at each other and have no problem with telling each other what we really think. As long as it's a structured intelligent discussion it gets sorted quickly.

Thanks again AR. I use adblock at home and subscribe to the filter service with it, but I never really played around with it for image blocks or any other features.

I was never offended by any avatars, and I have never reported anyone to a mod ("snitches get stitches!"). I just didn't want my colleagues at work to think I was surfing for boners instead of laughs.

At the risk of brownosing, I think the mods here do a great job. Most of the stuff they "censor" seems to be off topic or stuff that is explicitly forbidden.

Eater is gaining in popularity. That doesn't mean it has to "sell out" or go mainsteam. But honestly, some of the "angry vets" here really come across very harshly to new people sometimes. It's almost as if they despise anyone new and can't tolerate a "stupid question". Perhaps some people are resigned to keeping eater small and cliquey. They feel threatened about seeing their "old mob Vegas" being bought up by corporations and turned into "Disneyland for adults".

Thankfully, there are still a lot of members that are helpful and tactful when necessary. Smile

I suppose different people have different visions for Eater, some want things to remain as they are, or how they were a couple years ago. Others would like to see the site grow and become more effective through greater numbers. The former see greater numbers as a threat to Eater keeping "it's edge". The latter see increased numbers as the fruits of their efforts.

Meh, maybe I've got it all wrong, wouldn't be the first time. Smile

I'd beg to differ, the "angry vets" are usually venting at people that

a/ don't read the stickies

b/ don't have a mentor, (and as time has gone by, I realise just how important that is in here)

c/ are just absolute timewasters to start with

I doubt anyone here wants Eater to be small, our aim is to cause lads pain, loss of income, the more people we have actively doing that the better

Just follow the rules for this site

As for asking questions, I have not seen any question raised by a new to Eater member not given a reasoned response, I have though, seen trolls decimated and absolute &*(&wits given the response they richly deserved

I do hope I don't come across as an 'angry vet'. Crying or Very sad

I try to be friendly to newcomers because as the more people that join this site the more lads that hopefully will feel pain.
I'm with irish, what irritates me are people that post 'stupid questions' without having even reading their introductory PM, applied for a mentor, read the stickies or located the search button.

As for my avatar, she is staying, and you don't even want to know about her past! Laughing

NN, In a strange way it was handled just right, to make the perfect omelette you must first break a few eggs, (hence the first 3 pages) then you mix it all together, (the bickering and snipeing) you pour it into the pan and cook until light and fluffy, (decussion and resolution of possable impovments and changes) serve it up and enjoy. (implamatation and pratice of sead changes that were arived at by the first 3 steps)
The occasional blow up and venting that can make the board better and stonger. feeling may get hurt. but we all are grownups. we can deal with it.
Just like any other family, there will be fights and arguments, but when all is sead and done, we are still family and there for each other. with a common goal, to cause lad pain and to have fun.

I don't disagree with you, but wouldn't it be better to just ignore the post, let a mod gently point them in the right direction, and move on? What purpose does it serve it to berate them for not RTFM first and embarrassing them on their first post? If they piss you off, just ignore them or report them. At a minimum, try to remain polite.

I agree there used to be more of these posts, but there are fewer now. Not sure if the mods are culling them more quickly or if they just stopped.

It tends to wax and wane. If well established members start making these sort of comments sniping at new members, and it goes unanswered or ignored, newer members can easily get the idea that this is accepted culture here. after all it's very easy to pile on a new member who makes a post that's come up a million times.... you don't need to be here very long to know that "search is your friend" etc.

sometimes we experienced members just need to suck it up and give new members a straight answer even if it's been written a thousand times before.

If you see someone getting away with murder, please bring it to our attention. While there may be people here who believe they should have different rules because they have done good work, or been here for a long time, that is certainly not policy.

As has been stated a few times in this thread, if you are upset by something, please tell us and be specific. Stewing about it and making defeatist comments probably won't change anything. Use the "report this post" button, or PM a nearby mod.
