But I will comment on your post as an example of a politically correct over-reaction to a silly picture that was widely circulating on the web at the time. Posting that was no different than posting a ridiculous picture of rock star or a famous athlete or any other political figure or whatever. There was no politics or religion or racism or whatever involved. It was just fun.

And had I posted the Obama pic it would have been followed by an intelligent discussion of how the "race factor" is playing the election. That is not political but rather a social comment on an important issue. There is a difference whether or not you can grasp the dichotomy.

I had hoped that the Palin picture would stimulate discussion on topics such as “spin’ and “truth on the net”. Given the wide range of intellect on this forum there was a good possibility of some interesting and varied comments which, to me, offer up mental stimulation. I regret that I don’t get stimulated by tens of thousands of posts in the PW thread – but that’s just me.

The point that I am making (along with members such as HB) is that some here are so overly concerned with offending some unknown person in some possible future heated debate that even a silly picture is grounds for censorship. That is ridiculous to my mind. And it is antithetical to the free thinking minds that permeate this place. And that is sad.

It's simple. We have rules and they haven't changed.

Keep anything political away from here. It is censorship. No denying it. Not interested.

Mate, it might be better for you to not use the word 'over-reaction' right now.

I'm all for free speech and blah, blah, blah.... but this isn't going anywhere, and it never will. Hence the rules on anything political. Image, or text.

I spent the better part of the afternoon (between glimpses of football) crafting a response to Eight’s Cartesian logic – alas those hours of thought are now in the dust bin.

I love intellectual debate and regularly seek it out. But sadly I am ill equipped to deal with characterizations of my thoughts as heifer dung and admonishments to “move on or move out”. And to have it suggested that I am “racist” is simply beyond the pale.

So much for open discourse! So I will fold my tent and, as suggested, move on.

Wow I certainly didn't mean to kick off a shitstorm of bitterness, sorry about that....

But to recap, I never at any point asked the mods to do anything, only some members. I'm really happy with the technical solution I got with Adblock now, so I don't care what avatars are used anymore.

I don't know why some people seem so determined to interpret "free speech" as meaning they should be able to talk about anything, anywhere, anytime. You wouldn't go to an AA meeting to talk about internet routing protocols. Why would you come to 419Eater to talk about politics, religeon (two things that ALWAYS result in arguments) , etc when there are forums out there dedicated to debating issues like these?

I don't think people can blame the moderators to trying to keep the level of controversy down, keeping people focused on baiting, and spreading awareness of scams. I guess some people just like to stir things up and fight sometimes. Sad

By the sounds of things, the rules have always been the same but the level of enforcement has stepped up.

Healthy discussion is good. No-one is stopping that at all. No-one is preventing intelligent conversation.

We only ask that any political content not be posted. That's it. Taking my reference of moving on, or moving out in the very literal extreme sense is disappointing GH.

I'm all for self-controlled, reasoned, objective, adult, intelligent debate on any topic - even politics and religion. Unfortunately these 'hot' topics tend to attract people who possess none of those attributes so the current policy is the safest option. However, it would be great pity of these No Go areas were extended to include anything that might conceivably be considered "offensive" merely in order to protect the delicate sensibilities of a small minority. I'm not advocating Mob Rule, but I think in certain instances people need to lighten up already. I will fess up and say that there was a period when I too found one or two avatars crossed the line but if grown men want a semi-nekkid woman avatar as an expression of their forum identity then I'm pleased to see you embracing your inner female in such an eloquent fashion and you can't get more PC than that Laughing

Personally, I enjoy the 'edgy' atmosphere and the lively dynamics here and the fact that you CAN take the p*ss out of your mates (within reason) so it would be a great pity if that changed to something more vanilla and, dare I say, boring but perhaps that's just me.

Is this where I step in and say that discussing politics, racism and religion and 'sexy' avatars is very much like making love to a beautiful woman...? If so, just let me know and I will pull some pants on <coughs> as I'm currently otherwise engaged, in what I think is called scambaiting.

Maybe one radical solution is to get rid of the 'General Chat' forum and keep such stuff to either PMs or private emails. There again, for example, we would never have got to see Roy C's bathroom DIY and other endeavors.

Harry, as far as I am aware you are not an ex-member obviously NN's comment was not aimed at you. As far as the spouting bullshit comment is concerned. I see from your earlier comment that you seem to believe that certain things on this forum have tightened up since 1 year ago yet you offer no evidence of this. Do you have such evidence that points to a situation that you would have been able to get away with in the past that you would not be able to do today? Perhaps you have spoken to another member of the 419eater staff about this, you have certainly never contacted me with your concerns. If this is the case then why not bring it up so that we can look into it?

@Rover, Thanks for the reply. As I stated earlier, I still like Eater. I have name dropped this site in several other places. As for NN's comment, yeah I know he probably was not referring to me, and I still have tons of respect for everyone at Eater, especially the Admin and mods (yeah.....even TS Very Happy

).

As for providing proof of "tightening up", I won't go there. You run the site like you want to, no problems here for me. No need of getting into a pissing contest over silly things like that. I was just stating my opinion. That's all.

Some day when I have tons of free time I will come back and dish out some lad pain, but just can't right now.

Bottom line is, as you know, you will never please everybody. Things evolve. This site has evolved. That can be a good thing. It's just like anything else, you have some "seasoned" members that long for the days of old. With the growth this site has experienced, it's bound to be slightly different than it was.

With saying all that, let me just say one more time, Eater is a great site.

Okay, my 2 pence worth. I have been around for a time, and whilst not a prolific poster, do read the forums a lot. And I have to agree, the forum seems to feel like there is a lot more censorship. The religion and politics thing is fair enough, but you know what annoyed me a bit - the Olympics thread that kept getting modded… A few newish people seemed so partisan, as if they have personally trained the gold medallists that they were crowing about, and when one or two people engaged in some light banter, it was all swept away. Most odd.

I admit there was the odd very stupid post on the Olympics, but overall it was way to heavily censored!!

Notwithstanding that I have no issues with Eater, and think Rover a most excellent chap.

Perhaps I may expose myself to being kicked here, but on the topic of censorship, and people not liking what they hear, would an admin please explain why KD was demoted and eventually banned?

I would hope that an ex-mod, who had several years of faithful service, would deserve a better title than **BANNED**. Even Hitler provided a better final exit solution to Rommel, as opposed to a public execution.

I think the points Harry and Gold Hat make are valid. The Admins are great and so are most of the mods (save one JMRazor). But, things have changed. Banter that was once acceptable on the site is no longer. People were getting offended by past PWTs and they reported posts and such. The attitude from "ye olde days" was kind of "If you don't like it, don't read it" type thing. PWTs are stupid, but that is their intent. People have stupid stuff to write, so they do so there. In my personal opinion, letting people post in PWTs with less censorship keeps people from posting crap elsewhere.

I am not saying it is right or wrong to let this kind of activity go on. I have my opinion, but it's not my forum. Some of the mods asked for specific examples and I think I provided one or two. It's still a great place to come and a good way for me to redirect my jerky actions towards a lad, rather than a real person that I have to deal with on a daily basis.
