At 0923 today I graduated from Ft. Lee Virginia as an MOS Qualified 92A or an Automated Logistical Specialist. I had the honor of graduating as both a squad leader and as a distinguished honor grad. I recieved commendations from a colonel and two command sergeant majors. In any case the first order of business is to secure a new laptop and begin dishing out lad pain.

Ex congrats! Thank you for your service to the armed forces.

Now other than "you graduated" and "some important people said you did good" what does the rest of all that mean for us non-military types? What do you do in the armed forces?

I am just curious, and whatever it is you do I am happy you do it for us!

Yep- the plural rank being sergeant, a non-commissioned rank, while a major is a commissioned officer.

So, a sentence could be, "The sergeant's major shares an office with several sergeants major."

You would also say Sergeants First Class.

As an aside, a gaggle of male officers are never called 'sirs' but are referred to as 'gentlemen' instead.

This point was made to me when I was a very young Private....at the point of a pipe stem between two of my ribs by a very emphatic Sergeant Major of mine. Laughing
