It turned out we had caught a 4 foot King Fish. |
I grew up running charter fishing boats in the Gulf of Mexico with my folks. The thought of catching a king fish sans-rod & reel makes me involuntarily wince in pain. |

I go diving for crayfish(lobster without claws) spearfish at the same time.
Where i work 2weeks on 2 weeks off is some of the best fishing in the World. Usually go after works and bring back 2 or 3 Emperor, You can also catch A variety of mackerel. spaniards are the best. but wahoo are the fasest, cobia, sharks, coral trout, Cod, gouper, tuna, squid, queenfish, Giant/golden/goldspot trevally. Chinaman fish, threadfin Salmon all of the emperor/northwest snapper family. thats all i can think of at the moment.
I had a fly rod from canada but it was stolen just got a new one from there. I can cast ok but have not used it much.
Biggest spanish Mackerel i have caught was about 17kg and that was just the front half after the sharks had torn the back half off next to the boat.
the sharks tax your catch a fair bit here.
had a mackerel bitten in half in mid air once. mackie jumps out of the water with jaws launching out after it. that was a site to see.
then at home we i can just go down the river sit back with a 1kg live mullet on a hook and every so often you will get a mulloway(jewfish for the eastcoasters) usually around 10-15kg.
Took a friend up north on a fishing trip and he wondered why i was laughing at his fishing gear until his reel was in pieces and $100 worth of line contiued to peel off into the sunset, then he lost a few lures because of inferior gear. He called it Psycho fishing which is right on. those that have tangled with big wahoo, tuna etc will know what i mean. 200m of line ripped off your spool inabout 10 second. |

^ @Master
I was at Barwon Heads one evening, a small submarine took 2/3 of my line, came back, went out again, finally landed a 38kg mulloway in the estuary.
Phenominal fish, they just tow like a Holden on steroids |

@Master I have a story you will appreciate:
...Was spearfishing off a ledge in the South Pacific once; water slightly murky; on outward edge of the barrier reef you-know-where. The prize catch was king mackerel as it happened to be "season". Their were a few to be had. We were using "tahitian style" wooden guns: ~2m spear+2m gun +4m line +1 arm's length... No reel & ~200kg+ mono... Very crude... No give/spring whatsoever; very rigid but super fast.
I spotted a good one approaching head on - as in not much of a profile - (a heart-thumper, frankly!). As it happened, the murkiness did not lend itself too well to depth perception/visibility on that day. I thought I was shooting at something akin to this:
http://www.stephenwong.com/divetoto/gallery/album24/Spanish_Mackerel_01
I waited for the optimal moment (the turn) & fired as the fish's profile started to reveal itself. The spear connected solidly (for once). Before I could even tighten my grip (not that it would have done any good), the gun took off like it was tied to a VW bus....
In fact I was mistaken, this is what (we think) I was looking at (somewhat unusual in that particular area & so close to shore):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/33609178@N00/294654837/
http://www.stephenwong.com/divetoto/gallery/album24/Dogtooth_Tuna_01
http://www.flickr.com/photos/currer/305976140/
...Of course I immediately went after the gun as fast as I could. But the last thing I saw in the distance was something about as long as the gun sounding (with said gun in tow) into the big blue. As it skirted around & under ginormous coral heads into the abyss (super fast that fish was) I could hear the "clink-clank" of the gun hitting rocks. It was out of sight in a few seconds time.
Some adult specimens on this page:

http://amonline.net.au/fishes/fishfacts/fish/gunicolor.htm
That was some years ago, and to this day, I am still the butt of many jokes as a result of that episode
In that particular place they are "cowboys" as well. |

@Dionysius you need to be careful dynamite fishing. Some now deceased family of mine where dynamite fishing and they got a woman floated to the top. Turns out she escaped from a mental institute a few days before and must have drowned.
@Tommo Shanter Dolphin fish can be quite expensive so I guess the skipper was only to happy to sell it for you
I'm happy to throw back most of what I catch. Tis a fun sport. |

I'll be in the Solomon Islands after December, based in Honiara for 2 years. Recommendations so far are to take a lot of 80+lb braid, 128 strand wire traces, and serious reels and rods. I have Penn Commanders, a couple of 13' surf rods, Shimano baitcasters, and 2 x 6 ' double roller boat rods
Anyone fished that area? I know there are a lot of Giant trevally /Wahoo/Tuna, Sail fish and Marlin, plus the smaller species. Anyone tried salt water flies? Soft baits?
Any and all suggestions gratefully received |

yes
used ball bearing swivels. they cost about $4.00au each so one rig will cost you about $16 in swivels but they dont break like the cheap gold coloured crap.
go the rapala lures or the halco lures blue and green metallic or the white ones with red heads(these work really well). dont go cheap.
best bait. use a throw net to catch the bait fish they are feeding on then keep the alive and you wont miss.
i have never done very well on soft plastics but i have never really used them consistantly.
Flies from boats is getting bigger here in AUST. they target pelagics. obviously you need to use wire tippets. they have comps now but the boat must be stationary when casting to count the fish. They tease the fish up then stop the boat |

I once used 7 strand wire leaders when shooting the iron. I even had them on my Rapalas so that I won't lose them when a barracuda swallows them. Wire leaders are also nice on northern pike in Canada. My son returned a Rapala after 10 days of canoing in central Canada with absolutely no paint on it. Half the wood was missing. I really thought there was no other way. I then saw my father-in-law bring in a 1000 pound black marlin with his hands. He used a eyeless 4/0 Gamkatsu on a 50 pound leader laced to a 300 pound floating yellow polypropylene line. Penn reel? Heck no, he just wound the line into a big bucket. Lure? Nope, an 8 pound bonito. After that, I've only fly fished. This past summer, I walked over the "red bridge" in Ketchican, Alaska and saw tens of thousands of King and Silver salmon running. They were side by side as far as I could see into the water. There was a tackle shop right across the road selling licenses and tackle. I watched a ten year old boy shooting a rubber shirted lure and the King's having to swim over each other to try and catch up to them. When they did hook-up, there was a three foot explosion of water. I thought for a moment about going "harvesting" but that's not fishing. |

My damn wheelchair keeps getting stuck in the sand so, I had to give up surf fishing, darn it
But I have my old "Ugly Stick" and try fishing at home!
Doesn't seem to matter what bait I use, I can't get my old goldfish "Goldee" to bite!
Any suggestions? |

^^^That's a wonderful thing to look forward to. I've taken my two kids fishing in three countries and ten different states. I have only fished with then twice though. When the kids were fishing, I would do everything I could so that they were having the best possible time and that usually meant no fishing for me. The very first time I took them to a great public pier and legally chummed the water with frozen squid bombs. I took ten pounds of squid and ran them through a blender and then froze them in small milk containers. The kids were fishing with Lucky Lura jigs with small pieces of squid on them. Each rig has 5 hooks with fish scales on them so they were bring them in 2 and 3 at a time. My boy asked me why we were the only one's catching fish. I told them that some people were fishermen and some people were not. The truth was that everyone else was going after big game fish and we were harvesting bait. They were small but were still very delicious. I have a video of my girl with a fish on for over an hour. The fish spooled her 10 times and each time I started up the motor and backed up the boat so that she could wind up the line. After over an hour fight, what ever was in the lake broke off. My boy and girl are both in the military now but the boy still carries a fishing rod and reel and fishes when he can. |
