"Anita" has been trying to scam me for quite some time, but Harold has been so bad with money that he never seems to have any. Fortunately, Harold hit upon the idea to use his position on a scholarship board to give scholarships to Nigerians. My avatar is the result of the first scholarship, but unfortunately the reward for that scholarship can't be sent by Western Union or Moneygram. The only scholarships that can be sent that way are the art and music scholarships. So, the lad applied for the music scholarship. I told him he had to sing the song "Hero of Canton" and I provided him with the lyrics and an example of it being sung. For anyone who hasn't seen Firefly, the song is from the episode Jaynestown, where Jayne Cobb has a city that considers him a folk hero, despite the fact that he's anything but. This video shows that clip from the show:

I don't recognize the song. But I can tell the song shouldn't sound like that. He is tone deaf. It is painful to listen to it.

I think you should ask him for another song.

Yeah, I've got another one planned, though I suspect he'll do that one even worse. I tried to get him to play guitar too, but it was pretty clear that wouldn't be possible.

Does the Lad's song bear any relation to this?

Woo! I love Firefly. And Joss Whedon. I am surprised that a Nigerian lad would be a fan of such a short lived show, though.

One of my lads is a fan of Lost...which kind of led to some problems because I have been doing a Lost-themed bait since day one. Apparently lads do watch TV. *shrugs*

You should bait him as Joss Whedon. That could get very amusing.

Err, actually I was joking when I said he was a Firefly fan. I guess I should have been more clear about that. I specified that for the scholarship he had to sing "Hero of Canton" and supplied him with the words and an example of someone singing it. I thought it was kind of ironic that the song was about stealing money. Wink

I love Firefly but couldn't decipher the lad's terrible singing effort without the above links.

Yastreb - nah, I wouldn't want the lad to butcher the Firefly intro. But the Ballad of Jayne Cobb is funny enough that having a lad sing it just makes it funnier. Very Happy

At first I wanted it to be a surprise, but I'll update my initial post to show where the song is from.

Unfortunately, the queue is 6 weeks long. I'd get him the knitting kit, but this particular lad doesn't seem to be much good at anything, let alone knitting. I was going to get him to sing one more song, probably "Still Alive" from the game Portal. Wink

My next step would probably be to officially find out he's a scammer and stop talking to him. But he would still keep getting contacted by the scholarship board. I'm tired of constantly professing my love to "Anita" and I'd rather chew him out as the persona of a busy, no-nonsense chairman of a scholarship foundation.

After that, maybe I'll try to get him to carve me a bust of Barack Obama or something.
