Dame Fortune fortune smiles upon you today. I happen to be the (unofficial) National repository for obsolete, broken, tiny, and generally farkled-up hard drives. One of them - a Maxtor - is particularly charming as it sings a jolly tune very loudly whenever power is applied. I gots bad SCSI drives, bad MFM drives, bad IDE and EIDE drives, and even a bad SATA drive.

One of them even marks the glorious day when IDE hard drives could be purchased for only $1 a MB! Maybe I'd best keep that.

It'll take a little while to make sure those that can actually be accessed are erased.

I particularly recommend the MFM drives, as Mm will have NO way of connecting to them. In addition, the MFM drive has some sort of disk-doubling software on it.....should keep them busy for days. Lessee, the 40MB MFM drives must be about 20 in. (51 cm) down in the pile.

I also have full-height drives, but they go about 5 lb (2.6 kg) each, so would be costly to ship. One of them is currently serving as a doorstop, but I could probably find something else for that task.

I forgot the best part....the Maxtor that sings loudly when powered (I think it's "Carry me back to old Virginny", but can't quite be sure) really IS 120 GB. That definitely has to be the first to ship.

I could explain why they sing when damaged, but nobody cares about the technical details. Just take my word - it's charming as all get-out.

I'm looking right at it. It's a DiamondMax Plus 9, 120 GB ATA/133. Manufacturing date is 21 May 2003. Serial number is Y3JJZ9AE.

One of its exciting new features - although not obvious at the time - was a warranty of ONE YEAR. Not from the date of purchase - from the date of manufacture. It croaked at about 13 months. Possibly the head is stuck in place so it just keeps pumping more and more current into the voicecoil, causing it to scream like a banshee.

Perhaps I should sponsor it for American Idol.

Side note about hard drive manufacturers:

Many now offer a 5-year warranty. If you buy a new drive, bring it home from the store, find that its NFG (happens more than you'd like to think), they get to replace it with a USED refurbed drive.

I never trust a new HDD with data unless it passes Spinrite 6.0 first. Seagates have an annoying tendency to come up with a LOT of uncorrected seek errors. Maxtors (owned by Seagate) are also crap. The above described 120 GB was my last Maxtor EVER.

WD used to be low-line, but the vast majority of them pass and live long. Having good luck lately with Hitachi.

At least they're really, really inexpensive now. I just paid $70 + shipping for a new 500 GB Hitachi SATA II.

Maybe I'll copy this to general chat, if anybody thinks my half-assed opinions are of even the slightest value.

I went to the computer parts store, and they said they needed a lot more information about what type of 120GB hard drive you wanted. Also, he said they don't carry very many hard drives as small as that any more.

I showed them your e-mail, and the guy said it looked like a scam to him. He's just a damn kid, and a very uncooperative fellow I thought.

I could try a different computer store, but I think I need a better description of what you need. Anyway, I don't know where to send the hard drive.

But it's just the same crapola. Google Maps was singularly unable to find anything about this address or its variants, although the address is used consistently amongst various potential scamees (us).

This is a shame, as I am quite anxious to dispatch a spectacularly screwed up 120GB Maxtor drive, and have a can of red paint at the ready.

Udo is apparently in need of a nice hot cuppa Kenyan coffee, as (s)he has lost track of the fact that (s)he never before mentioned a friend or "her" to me. Or possibly business is so good that forgetting the scamee's name is acceptable. Also, why a test question and answer, as we had not reached the MTCN stage as yet?

(S)he seems to have bailed on Woosfriend at the MTCN stage, but has not changed the format one little bit.

UPS cost to ship two hard drives (3 lbs/1.4 kg) from California USA to Lagos, Nigeria is $212.38. United States Postal Service (USPS) is a LOT cheaper:
