I'm busy testing this OS in a Browser called EyeOS

eyeOS is a new kind of Operating System, where everything resides on a web browser. With eyeOS, you will have your desktop, applications and files always with you, from your home, your college, your office or your neighbour's house. Just open a web browser, connect to your eyeOS System and access your personal desktop and all your stuff just like you left it last time.

I have setup a server for testing - If you are interested in testing this system simply go to http://eyeos.sytes.net/ feel free to register and try it out.

I will be bringing the system down in a week or two but in the mean time give it a try and tell me what you think.

I've had a go, and it looks useful. Let me know if you work out how to take pieces in the chess.

When I move my piece to the square of the enemy piece I want to take, nothing seems to happen.

I know I'm doing it wrong, but I don't read instructions, even when there are any.

It works I can assure you - I just tried it. click on piece a then click where you want it to go! and whalla! it takes the piece

Edit: BTW anyone who registers there gets two gigs of hdd space. I have disabled the mail system though.

Very cool. The future of personal computing seems to point towards the "cloud" version of an OS, whereas we are all terminal users and do not need an OS, just a box to access the interwebs. But do we trust these people to store our personal information on their servers? Other than that, this is very cool, and fun to play with.

I'm not sure if there is any serious value in it at the moment. As a simple "Holder of files" it works well. The applications still have a long way to go though if they ever intend to compete with local os apps. But as you say - it is a really cool toy to play with.

well the new windows (Midori?) is supposedly going to be mainly web based.

Is EyeOS basically some sort of standalone VPN based system? Or have i got the idea completely wrong?

Looks handy Rover.

I've been on Ulteo for a while.

Don't think serious business users are ready to migrate to the cloud just yet though.
That said, it's handy to be able to have all your favourite apps to hand and be able to access your docs and files anywhere in the world you have net access.

No. It's simply a web site http://eyeos.org/en/ , but using applications to demonstrate the functionality of how it -could- be used as a desktop. Each application can be stand-alone, or integrated with a website. eyeOS will still continue it's development as a browser based OS, I suppose it's the most obvious and challenging part of a web based project.

Many Vista users will already have seen googles API (same sort of idea), where many of the applications can be independant of the browser.

Kind of reminds me of 'litestep' which was a windows program to customise your desktop

It's nice concept, but I don't find a web browser on the desktop.

eyeNav is the browser, it is found under the applications tab. (I am using it to make this post) Interestingly, I am running a browser inside of a browser and Firefox auto-populated my sign in info for Eater.

Another tip, if you are running AdBlock with Firefox, disable it for this site, it does seem to block some of the apps.
