Well preferably in the British Isles. I'm trying to train a bonsai (Sycamore)and theres some sort of leafcutting insect thats taking chunks from the leaves. it looks like a bee but with big jaws, and a small orange patch on it's arse.
thing is i know that many insects have symbiotic relationships with plants and trees, so i'm wondering if there's some sort of enzyme or chemical in the insects saliva that is actually beneficial to the tree. Or should i be standing guard and splatting them when i see em?
Google has come up with very little for insects in Ireland and not much else for the UK. Just the usual ladybirds etc.
Any help and/or info would be greatly appreciated. |

Without seeing the shape of the damage, a guess is a *solitary bee* also know as a *leaf cutter bee*
They have an orange spot on the underside of their abdomen at the tail.
You're meant to let them live, as bees are a protected species, as far as I'm concerned, a good dose of derris dust does wonders for them.
Either that, or a fine screen over your bonsai |

Rough semi circle and your description is bang on. i couldn't remember which order the thorax and abdomen were in hence the 'arse'
Thanks for that. I'd prefer not to kill them but this tree is 4 years old now and by far the best of what i started with. I'll search for the dust today.
EDIT: Jimmy, thats not it. It's jet black with the orange being the only colour. thanks though.

The pics are of the same species but these wee chaps are different.
@JMR. sorry had absolutely no idea i had double posted. i would have deleted the extra one if i'd noticed
