Since the repository of scammer emails at http://www.repository.izone.me.uk/ appears to have gone offline, I've been attempting to bait scammers posted here in the surplus letters forum by helpful baiters. But I've had several instances, too many, of my email replies being bounced for "no account". I realize this happens occasionally, but the frequency is simply too high for coincidence.

I suspect that someone with access to the surplus letters forum, probably with the best of intentions, is killing lad email accounts. Several years ago, I too killed lad accounts, but someone set me straight. Perhaps it's time for another reminder: killing a lad account does little to inconvenience the lad, since he can open a new account within minutes. But killing a lad account can and does spoil a bait. So please don't do it. Thank you.

It's very easy for a lad to open a new account, however, not all lads are smart enough to keep a record of their baiters and victims' email addresses....

Unfortunately (for us baiters) there are people who think they are doing a public service by going out and killing as many lad accounts as possible.

Although their sentiments are in the right place, it doesn't occur to them that the lads will simply move on to new accounts and start over.

@mami: Maybe not the first time they lose a victim, but they certainly are the second time. Often they are in phone contact as well.

There are lots of good reasons for leaving boxes alone. They have been discussed here many, many times, but it never hurts to repeat my personal favorites:

When lads use the same email addresses for a length of time, they tend to get published on anti-scam sites such as this one. Victims can find them if they become skeptical of the deal they are involved in and do a little homework. Warning groups such as ScamWarners often rely on this as a means of convincing victims that they are involved in a scam.

However rarely, law enforcement investigations do occur. Closing boxes makes it much more difficult to track scammer gangs and find patters, and most importantly, evidence may well be lost.

Without question, it may be possible to spare a victim or two by closing boxes, but in my opinion, it does more harm than good.

Yes, same thing happened to one of my lads. Thought he might have twigged on me, but turns out his email address got shut down and it took him a couple of days to get a new one

No, but fortunately for him, the victim - who really believes s/he is about to receive millions - probably kept his phone number.

There are many reasons for not Killing accounts, however People with the best of intentions are not going to be swayed with the “it spoils my bait argument”

well at best it does nothing, at worst it clouds things and allows them even greater anonymity by foxing the efforts of urgentmessage.org and others.

and it ruins baits.

Before I got into this, though, I'd angrily forward my latest lotto winning email to Yahoo, with a 'how the hell can you let them get away with opening a [email protected] email address?', expecting them to kill it.

It's all just part of the game, other people other games and your lad wasn't going to be your life long friend anyway Wink

One of the reasons I collect IP#'s, I can find my friends back, usually within a month they're back at their game and show up in surplus again.
I can imagine that some people, thinking doing the right thing, use the public surplus for killing email addy's, so have your lad make a special addy for you just to be sure that the transaction stays confidential at all times Twisted Evil

An extra handicap in the game, just makes it more interesting to get to your goal. Sh!t happens, just be prepared or start over again.

@Pilgrim - these folks might have a hand in killing your lad accounts. I'm not saying that they are responsible for yours, but go to their site and judge for yourself.

I am a little suspicious that some of the mail providers may be trying to weed out scammers, though they seem more keen on closing my accounts than those belonging to Lads.

I opened a gmail account today and every mail I tried to send said it had been detected as potential spam. It was only a single test message with a simple hi. Shocked

... and gmail is very peculiar over attachments too.

My catcher account is hotmail and a lot of the scam e-mails are indicated as not safe. I've been marking all the ones I've been getting as unsafe. I would assume this would only be a notice to potential victims and not the same as reporting or closing the accounts. Am I on the right track here?

@sheboppe - I think you're correct. Looks very much to me as if these folks are the ones killing the surplus letter accounts. If I were part of this group (Heaven forbid!) the surplus letters forum would provide a rich source of scammer emails, especially since the repository has gone tango uniform (which causes me to wonder if there's a connection).

^^ We had quite a debate with them about closing lad accounts, but it was like arguing with a stop sign. They are determined that they are right no matter what so it's pretty pointless to even try to get them to see that they really aren't doing a good deed like they think they are.

^^ That is not something that we wish to do. Surplus is not behind a login so anyone has access to it. Blocking that access would be counterproductive.

In the last 4 weeks I have lost all my baits about 8, I pulled them all from surplus. Varying stages. Can someone Pm me some not so public lads?

I'm not baiting (yet?) so I have no horse in this race. Its just that the consensus of this forum seems to be that accounts shouldn't be shut down. According to the posts in that other thread referenced above the folks doing this don't care about that consensus, so why not prevent them from using this site to kill addresses?
