unzipping .gz files

Anyone know of any simple application for Windows XP that can extract .gz files. I'm using WinRAR which seems to support everything I've had so far but these show as unrecognised. I've thought about renaming the files but the archive is pretty big so it would probably take time. Hoping someone here might know Very Happy

Have you tried 7-zip?

I always use winzip (unzip). Works just fine.

For .gz files? I just tried winzip and this time it comes up with a prompt asking me to rename the archive to the proper format Confused

It allows me to choose a file name in a dialogue box but if this worked for KD then it means an old version of tar/gunzip has been used. These files are in a .tar container.

Havent tried 7-zip yet. I'm currently at 99% cpu and probably will be for a while so ill check back here for any other bright ideas Very Happy

I get a window that says: "Please enter the full name of the file contained within the archive ***. For example, if the contents is a DOC file, a recommended filename is ***.DOC"

So, I just ignore that and hit "OK." I can then easily unzip the file.

If it's an ascii file, you're set. Otherwise - if you don't know what the file format of the contents is - use an ascii editor that can open large files and take a peak at the contents to see what format it is and then rename your output so the program in question will recognize it.

I've done it for years. Always worked.

Bloody ascii files, i never even viewed the file as i just seen a broken archive icon. The winrar text reader is usually crap and the files are huge.

root cause : operator error
