As if Rupert Everett wasn't bad enough, news from Variety that Robert Downey Jr. is slated to play SherlockHolmie erm, Sherlock Holmes....

The only more distressing news is in paragraph six where it is mentioned an upcoming comedy with Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell playing Holmes and Watson.

Is there no justice for me?? Wink

If Robert Downey Jr played me i'd be honoured-of course my first choice would be Depp. Very Happy

I think the best Holmes was Jeremy Brett, he seemed to fit the part so well

Ian Richardson played Holmes in two films - and did a good job IMO. Jeremy Brett was the best of them though.

Really I just don't see any of the three playing any of the parts well. I will say at least Sacha Baron Cohen is British....

Basil Rathbone was a great Holmes (although Nigel Bruce played the dim-witted Watson rather too well) - however, for my money Rathbone's finest role was as Guy of Gisborne in the 1930s Robin Hood.

Holmes may not have been his best role, but still miles better than anyone else who has donned the Deerstalker. Very Happy

RE: RAthbone vs anyone else.

Rathbone played Homles 12 times in the 40's, and beore his death said that the role ruined his career. He became so identified with the role that he felt that many roles passed him by because all anyone could see of him was Holmes.

My vote goes to Basil....

RDJ is a very accomplished actor. If he turns down the me-so-loopy note he sometimes brings to his roles he could be fantastic. He has the manic enthusiasm I imagine Holmes has when he's on a high, and his performance in Zodiac was one of the best things in it.

If Cohen and Ferrel do a comedy... well, it's a comedy and can be safely ignored. Wink

NB: Neil Gaiman's masterly twisted take on the Holmes universe in 'A Study in Emerald' is a work of genius, and worth a read (or listen; available as a free audio book. If I say more I'll spoil it, but it's a must-listen.

I thought he did an excellent job playing me in that documentary Iron Man. He also was fantastic in Good Night, and Good Luck.
